The rising value of shipping tonnage has now been officially recognized by: the Government, and in a practient fashion. Under the State scheme of insurance, inaugurated on the outbreak of war, the amount which shipowners could insure through the mutual clubs was strictly limited. The amount was limited to the original cost of the ship, less an allowance for depreciation at the rate of 4 per cent for every year of age.
