The matches should have been played the previous Saturday, but this was rendered impossible by the heavy downpour of rain during the week. The weather was ideal, and some excellent tennis was played. It was no surprise to many that the Japanese representatives were successful in both Kumagai has got through the matches singles championship by superior play: and in the doubles he has been well partnered by 8. Mr. Macleod submitted that the claim was fraudulent, in the first place, be- cause the plaintiff had claimed for certain jawellery which was not his, and secondly, which were not on the premises at the time that he had claimed for certain goods that an inventory was made of the pre- mises as far back as March, 1914, which of the fire. Evidence would be given was particularly important because the plaintiff sheltered himself Counsel used the expression with all deference behind documents destroyed, and was not able to the argument that he had a lot of his make a complete inventory. Mr. O'Neill, the agent of the defendant company who AND had charge of the case after the fire, would tell the Court that he had the greatest difficulty with the plaintiff There were certain steps which the plaintiff should have taken in Swatow to bring to the notice of the company the important facts concerning the contents of the hotel, There was apparently no trace in the fire such a's one wold expect to find of a larga quantity of wines, stores and crockery. It might he said that before Mr. O'Neill went to Swatow the plaintiff had no knowledge of what was needed by the Insurance Co, but that could not be said after his arrival, for he was careful to go throughly into the matter with Mr. Hyde.
The secretary of the Scottish Football League has compiled a list of players who are serving with, the colours or are engaged on Government work from which it appears that the East Coast Clubs, from Aberdeen and Dundes to Edinburgh; have done the best, and the Glasgow and Lanarkshire clubs by far the worst. The solitary bright spot in the Glasgow record our only Scottish is Queen's Park, amateur League club, which bas given 20 players to the New Army and has 6 men engaged on Government work. They thus occupy the first placs in the football Ro of Honour, and can
