Coming up from below, there was no rushing or panic, but everything was done smartly. There were five torpedo boats alongside in less than two minutes and if anybody deserves praise it is the crews of those destroyers. Talk about the V.C. and the D.O.M. If they did't deserve one each, then nobody does.
We can thank our lucky stars that the Turks are lawfully had shots, otherwise we should have been blown into kingdom
comb.
Wherever we looked; we could see ai- thing but huge splashes there the shella wore pitching in the water, Luckily, nono bit our destroyer. There were 317 men in our boat, and we were not sorry to see her make twenty-five knota, We were about three hours on the destroyer, and afterwards transferred to H.M.S. Agamemnon and H.M.S. Canopus. I am on the latter at present.
I don't know how long it will last, but the Turks have got everything to knock our beads off-torpedoes, mines, shells. bombs, and bullets. However, the "Eliza' 16,000.00 has got something bigger. When you get 5,174,60 a 15-in. shell up against a fort, the latter is not going to last long. British Underwriters here and at home are prepared to extend support to the Government's ideas as to the undesir ability of trading in China with subjects of countries at war with Great Britain To this end the co-operation of Banks and Shipping Companies here and at home is necessary.
I may add that latest advices from home are to the effect that the British Government fully realizes the necessities of the position..
Your Commities are unanimously of opinion that the covering either directly, indirectly or by way of reinsurance by British Insurance Companies of risks on cargo owned by persons or firms of enemy nationality, or in which such persons or firms are interested, cannot be too strong- ly deprecated.
