Postponed from Saturday, the opening meeting of the season of the Hongkong Gymkhana Club did not draw a large crowd of spectators yesterday. The weather was in striking contrast to that which prevailed on Saturday, a tropical sun shining throughout the afternoon. Among those prment were H.E. the Governor, Lady May and the Misses May, and Sir William and Lady Rees Davies.

The programme was composed of six events, all of which were keenly contested and thoroughly interesting, especially the miscellaneous item of lemon slicing.

The last race is worthy of comment in that the winning jockey, Capt. Ander son, of an Indian Laneers regiment, had not previously ridden over the Happy WOOD WORK, BRICK WORK, Valley course. Shabrang was also an

A GERMAN HINT TO SUBMARINE CAPTAINS.

While some German critics are fully satisfied with the progress of the sub- marine campaign and describe England as in process of being choked by the "iron ring closing round her with mathematical certainty. Count Reventlow considera that suicidal humanitarianima” on the part of submarine captains 19 whittling away the whole scheme.

Count Reventlow da acknowledged in Germany as an expert critic, and born before and during the war has had the reputation of being in specially close touch with the German Admiralty. His views, therefore, may be taken to repre- sont un Admiralty hint

They carry guns with very rapid fire and capable of mortally injuring at a considerable distance any submarino showing itself on the surface."

Count Reventlow proceeds to describe the method of using destroyers to calch

submarines. We have to picture a submarine hunt by destroyers somewhat thus: These light craft either cruise at definito distances from another or they Tie still, preserving the same distances. Even if the attempt to ram is a failure the enemy's destroyers only increase their watchfulness, thes ground that the anbmarine must sooner or later come somewhere to the surface to get its bearings. That is particularly the case in waters where there is a great deal of merchant shipping."

Explaining the picture thus drawn, Re- ventlow points out that owing to the narrow range of vision of the submarine through its periscope, or even from the conning towery compared to the range af
