THE LAST JUDGMENT.”
SPOER'S ORATORIO AT ST.
JOHN'S CATHEDRAL,
The partonnance of Spohr's "Last Fudgment" at St. John's Cathedral on the night of Good Friday was notably successful.
There was a large and representative congregation, which enjoyed to the very last item the solcmanes as well as the freshness and effectiveness of the music. Spour is a composer who has the priceless gift of imagination, extra- ordinary skill in part writing, a fine sense of colour, and, even more, of elimax. Above all, his music has irresis tible charm.
The most important of the whole work fell upon the chorus, and their perform- wace was undoubtedly excellent. The attack was splendid, the soft parts qually good, and the climaxes were as near perfect as could be realised, and in every instance where the chorus lad to come in they showed that they knew thoir work thoroughly.
Mr. Dennas Fuller, the Cathedral Lorganist, undoubtedly proved himself a most successful chorus master, and the eminently satisfactory outcome of the extraordinary amount of hard work he had put in must have bem very gratify
