DEATH OF MR. DRUMMOND OF SHANGHAI,
STORY OF A MEMORABLE LIFE.
Mr. W. V. Drummond, the well-known barrister of Shanghai, died last week at the age of 73. Mr. Drummond was known to many in Hongkong, by whom the following account of his career kaken from the N.-C. Daily News will be read with deep interest:-
Mr. Drummond was born in London and was connected with the Powys family, of which Lord Liford is the head. As a young man he went to India and was engaged for some timo in coffee planting in Mysore. It was here that be met Mrs. Drummond, whose father was a general in the Indian Army, and they were neurried in 1884. After some three or four years in India, Mr. Drum mond returned to London and was, in que course, called to tho Dot at the Inner Temple in 1870. He then went to Australia, but after a short stay there came to Hongkong in December, Lol: where he practised as a barrister. December, 1873, he was invited to Shang hai to join Mr. Rearvie Crowis Advocate, afterwards Sir Richard Romic in practice, who was going home, whence, we believe, he did not return.
Since that date until his death Mr. Drummond had only once again, we believe, set foot in England. But the activity of his intellect led him to keep closely in touch with affairs at home, and it may be mentioned that he was a great friend of Sir Valentine Chirol, recently
Foreign Editor of The Times, as of Dr. G. E. Morrison, with whom for many years he kept up a voluminous correspon donce.
