Evidence in support of the charge have ing boon given, the first prisoner admitted he had done wrong. He said he was an ignorant mam, & farmer, and he asked his lordship for lenience. The other two also admitted their guilt, the second pleading that he did not know that he was doing

wrong.

The jury found all three prisoners guilty of forgery, but not guilty of the second charge, forgery with intent to de- fraud.

Co., Mr. W. E. L. Shenton (for plaintiffs) said that the negotiations which had been going on for a month were not satisfac tory as far as the plaintiffs were con- cerned, and he wanted a date fixed for the hearing of the action. That was the only way of getting it settled.

Mr. Dennys said his client had gone to Swatow about the case, but he was quite agreeable to a date being fixed for some The case was fixed little time ahead. for Monday week.

advised him to see Mr. Davidson..

The Attorney-General, in answer to question from the Bench, said that view of the jury's finding the Crown did not regard the case as a very serious ore from the point of view of the prisoners, From the point of view of the Land Ofice, and the public, it was, however, more serious, though fortunately the fraud was detected before harm was done

naturally conclude that the Chinese have lost the sense of shame and will look upon. them as cowards. The petitioners then proceed to remind the Government that the Government every year sends students to Japan instead of Europe and America. In so doing, the only object gained is the expenses, but if the total amount of funds the Government disburses each year in respect of all the students in Japan be reach $1,000,000, to, which must be added taken into consideration, the figures will twice as much, forming the amount the self-supporting students expend. As to the education they receive in Japan, the petition continues, the standard is not so good as that in Europe and America, hence it is obviously advisable for the Govern- ment to establish a school in this country with the funds it disburses for the students in Japan and employ competent Western ers as teachers in that institution. In this way, the students argue, much good will accrue to the students and the country at les expenso. They further add that the Government in sending students to Japan expects to improve the diplomatic relations between these two countries, but it is by this time clear that the Japanese, instead of appreciating this friendly feel- ing on the part of the Chinese Govern- ment, have subjected us to insuf's and have assumed an overbearing attitude towards us. Therefore, according to the views of the students, the funds the students spend in Japan have undoubtedly! given no little financial support to the Japanese people, who reciprocate this kindness with ill-will. The petitioners then draw the conclusion that to send students to Japan by spending large sums of money in a country which harbours malicious intentions against us is tant amount to a man who supplies brigands lethal weapons-Peking Gazette.
