As soon as war broke out com munication with Belgium was so seriously interrupted that such communication as remained was practically neeless, and in the third week of August, with the German occupation of Brussele, com- munication ceased entirely.

THE YEAR'S PROFIT INCREASED DIVIDEND.

Continuing, he said the profit for the year to June 30th amounted to £153,059, as already detailed to you. The balance brought forward from the previous year was £6,854, making a total of £161,513 From this we have to deduct income tax paid to June 30th, 1014, £9,245, and the interim dividend of 5 per cent, free of income-tax, which was paid on May 15th last, £80,000, leaving an available balance of £102,288, as compared with an avail able balance in the previous balange-shoot of £50,854. You will remember that the total dividend for the previous year was 8 per cent. The dinotors have given careful consideration to the question of the final dividend, and in the result they have decided to recommend a final divi dead of 5 per cent, making total of 10 per cent for the year, leaving a balance of £32,209 to be carried forward to the next year. In ordinary circum stances they would doubtless have felt justified in proposing a larger dividend. They have, however, had to take into consideration the fact that the balanes to the company's credit at their bankers in Brussels is not available and will not be available during the course of the war, and that in the meantime we are having to provide in London for expenditure which would otherwise have been made in Brussels. They have also hand to consider the prosent and future demands upon the Kailan Mining Administration in respect of capital expenditure, and also the fall in exchange, to both of which I will refer later. It would have been more agreeable to the directors to have declared a larger dividend, but the special circumstances. I have mentioned portraordinary fines through which we are passing require them to exercise both prudente and foresight The financial position of the company is strong, and we feel that it is our duty to keep it so......

INCREASE OF 40 PER CENT. IN COAL BALES.

Now is to the business done by the Kuilan Mining Administration during the past year, our report tells you that the sales of coal amounted to 2,411,038 tons, which compares with a total of 1,728,200 tons for the preceding year- that is, an increase of 40 per cent. The report further states that the sales for the current year, that is, for the five months July to November inclusive, show. Batisfactory increase over those for the corresponding period of the past year. Perhaps it is not advisable, and certainly it is not necessary, to go into details on- this subject. The figures speak for them- selves. The general manager reports that development work has been actively carried on at all mines to meet the increased output required, with the result that at the end of the year there were 14,440,000 tons in sight, an increase of nearly 4,000,000 tons compared with the same date last year. It may interest you to know that the number of cookies employed underground in the various mines is about 13,000.

It is, of course, impossible that such great development as has taken place in bur business can be effest without nvolving a large capital expenditure. A washing plant has been installed at the Liasi Mine and is just coming into operation, by means of which the high percentage of ash in various grades of coal will be reduced, and consequently better prices will be obtained for them. A high-tension power line between Linsi and Chaolochwang is in course of erection and will be completed in a few months time, and the necessary materials are being ordered for the continuation of this line to the Machiakoy Mine and to Tongshan. The general manager states short or long, that as it seems probable that in the Future the total output from all mines will be required to be increased above 9,000 tons per diem, I forsee that further large expenditure, spread over the next few years, may prove necessary, chiefly for the increased generation of electricity and the connecting up of all mines with a high tension power line from the Linsi Power House."
