Freight on Goal between Moji and Yokohama (the standard criterion in coasting trade freights) rules at about 48 sen shippers offering only 45 sen. Usually between 80 sen and Y1 is obtainable.

"It is easy, enough to understand the depression in the interport business, since trade is undeniably dull and people can- not afford to spend money this year-end. As regards the longer journeys, however, the withdawals of foreign steamers have been in larger proportion than the con- traction of trade, with the result that ships have benn unable to cope with the American trade and we havo frequently heard lately of cargo being left behind. The European lines are also doing good business, and the high freights ruling in the Atlantic will presently make themselves felt here also The lizers, therefore, may expect to recoup in freights a good deal more than they are losing in subsidies during the coming year. Many complaints have lately bon made about the impossibility of shipping goods. promptly to Shanghai, and the placing of some of the larger coasting steamers on this run for a while would scem to be the best sans of relieving both the con- gestion in the China trade and the dulness in local shipping.Japan Chronicle

A prominent Dutch politician, rofer ring to the fall of Antwerp, expressed the following opinion as representing the general feeling at The Hague towards Great Britain: Had Britain set troops to Antwerp through the Scheit matters would assuredly have taken a different course, for Antwerp would have been absolutely impregnable. To do this, however, Britain would have had to violate the neutrality of Holland, and Holland will never forget that Britain, at the cost of heavy disadvantage respected the scrap of paper and kept clear of the Scheldt. This great example of British honour is one which history will regard with admiration and the Dutch with everlasting gratitude.
