Other papers from Portugal seem to show that the little country seems to consider itself bound to stand by Britain at all costs. There are trestica between the two countries and the Portuguese nation has no other intention than to keep them. If Britain requires any asistance she has only to ask for it. The Portuguese army is small; it is not well trained; it lacks discipline; but no one has ever doubted its courage or its lighting qualities. Also, very recently, it was supplied with modern 75 guns from France and these ought to prove very effective.
THE CINEMATOGRAPH.
Nothing to be read in any British paper leads us to believe that Portugal is taking any active part in the war in Europe. In all probability she is doing something THE PASSPORT QUESTION.

This order has evoked quite lot of discussion in Macao and the local Portuguese paper, the Progresso, basa long article on the subject. This article is very forcible in tone and is strongly against the order. In fact it accuses the Government of being ignorant of tho most elementary principice of law. Some time after the war coramencod, says the writer, the authorities issued an order forbidding merchants to raise the price.

THE SILVER MARKET.
The writer then goes on to discuss the matter of the passport. The same point is emphasised, viz., that Martial Law should have been proclaimed first and as this action was taken, then the withdrawal of the right to leave the Colony when one wishes is merely an infringement of the liberty of the individual. The order, it is asserted, is quite uneailed-for and, far from being of cny use to the Colony, is only an obstacle. In Hongkong everyone can see the reason of such an order. Britain is at war and the civil law is suspended. But it is a disgrace to Macao, be concludes, to pretend that Portugal is

PURCHASES FOR CHINA:
Business was reported in London on the 10th ult. to be on a rather larger scale, the buying being chiefly on Far Eastern account.
Purchases on account of China have afforded sere competition, and have put a little animation into the market. The demand for this quarter arises from the approach of the Chinese New Year. The stock in Bombay is 1,100 bars, as com

The question as to whether Portugal is at war is a debatable one. Some weeks ago a telegram was published stating that Portugál had entered on the side of the Allics. After this meagre announcement no further information could be obtained, except the assertion of trouble in Angola. Newspapers received hare from Lisbon tells us that an expedition was sent from Portugal to Angola This force, consist ing of 3,000 men, sailed in British ships, convoyed by British cruisers. Since then we have learned thing additional of Portugal's part in the struggle. There have been, of course, the usual rumoura and at first we seemed to know more than we know now.. For example, it was. generally believed here that Britain had an agreement with Portugal whereby the latter country must send 20,000 mon to her assistance: Alter war was declared this number was selected and despatched to the front, and the old allies of the days of Moore and Wellington were once again fighting side by side. All here were as firmly convinced of his as the people of England were about the Russiaus from Archangel. It was reached for in the same positive way. The names of the offters in command of the men were in every mouth. Many were known in Macao as they had been here before. "Letters were received from Portugal confirming all this;
his, and the only evidence lacking to convince any stray scoffer was a casualty list.
We are still waiting for it. In the midst of all this excitement it occurred to no one to ask why Britain was dragging another nation into the most. sanguinary war in history for the sake of a few soldiers when just then men were besieging her recruiting offices and wors being accepted at the rate of 30.000 a day. Another report is really worth repeat- ing. I originated, I believe, in a news- paper from Portugal. This journal declared that Britain had asked Portugal to supply the British navy with 5,000 sailors as the British bluejackets were suffering severely, trour the intense strain of constant watchfulness and double spells of duty on deck, or at the boilers. The stokers in particular were tired cut and difficulty was experienced in keeping up All members who have not yet fired Part I steam in the rolling waters of the North of the Recruits' or Trained men's Musketry Sea A relief draft of 5,000 good men Course must attend at the King's Park from the Portuguese Navy was urgently Range en either Saturday afternoon, Jann- sent to England to give the worn-outary ord, or Sunday morning January 24th British stokers a much-needed rest.
