I am very glad to so that the Government, though late in the day, have made a partial moognition of their cbligations by promising the Society a yearly grant, though they have been careful to provide, by imposing a limit on it, that they shall never be guilty of assisting any expansion of the Society efferts to meet any reces sary demand

They have boin the breath of the Society's life. (Applause.) Let us now look a little to what has been done, The report tells us that 61 applications for help have had to bo considered and inquired into; each case carefully examined, and cach applicant's story thoroughly searched. If you look at the cases appealled to the report you will probably be amazed at the number and variety of the cases and the circumstances which brought the vari- our applicants to the Society's door. Twenty-one applications were received from women. Of these all received assistance either monetary or otherwise, Two large tin-lined unses were given to the socioty by Messrs. Loo, Crawford & Cas and are kept in the City Hat for storing old clothing. The secretary or assistant secretary is at the City Hall on Monday and Thursday at 11 o'clock to interview applicants for help and will receive grate fully at that time any gifts of clothing for men, women, and children in a fair state of proservation. Many valuable gifts of clothing have been received during the past rear for which the society gratefully tender their thanks. One of the most interesting features in the work of the society is the maintenance and education of fatherless children. At the present time, children (2 hoys and girly) are having com- plete board and education, and in addition girls and boys are having education and partial board which includes tifha, and ten, During the past year 2 children were bearded at school for a few months but were removed hy the mother when she required no further help. A very satisfactory development of the work of the sceity has been the promise of the Government to donite yearly a sum "equal to one half the money secured by sub. scription, prorided that the total grant does not excner the sum of 8500.00. Last year the grinte amounted to. $500.00/TOTA
