The South Manchuria Steamship Co., Dairen, which had five vessels purchased from abroad and registered at Dairen, has recently disposed of three of them, viz., the Pakoku Maru, the Kenkoku Maru and the Hokoku Marn. The Company opened last August with these three vessels a passenger service between Bingapore and Jeddah, in the Red Sea, for the purpose of transporting Mohammedans, most the British steamers in Indian waters having at that time been requisitioned by The Home Government as transports. The Jeddah service had a fair start and was practically monopolized by the Company, says the Manchurian Daily News: The resumption of the service by the British India S.N. Co.'s steamers has, however, given rise to a serious rate war. In conse- quence, the Japanese Company has been advised to quit the field.
The shipping returns for the port of Dairen for the month of November last, as prepared by the Marine Office, Dairen, give a total of 101 vessels with gross tonnage of 310,088' in arrivals and 182 rescela with gross tonnage of 208,054 in departure, showing an increase of af vessels of 114,700 tons and 29 vessels of 30,000 tens in entries and clearances rospectively.
In addition, 15-military transports with gross tonnage of 24,762 entered this port.

A British Foreign Office message, dated December 22nd, says, that Cameroon despatches state that after stubborn fight- ing Jussi Aded has been captured by. Anglo-French forces. There is abundant evidence that the Germans are systemati cally killing off all natives having sympathy with British rule. The Germans say the British way take the country, but they will find no inhabitants therein,
M. Delcassé (Minister of Foreign Affairs) has requested Sir Francis Bertie to present a gold chronometer, the gift of the French Government, together with the Government's thanks, to Captain Douglas Reid Kinnoir, of the steamship Ortega.... for his admirable bravery in escaping from the pursuit of a German cruiser in the Straits of Magellan, and thereby saving 300 French Reservists who were on board his ship.
A remarkable illustration of the intre pidity and enterprising adaptability of the British Indian troops has been given on the Franco-Belgian Front. A British officer bet a French officer that his com pany of Indians would capture thirty German sentinels guarding a wood in Flanders. The wager was token, and that night a fearful din was heard in the trench from the wood in question. Then silence, and the Indians returned in couples, each bearing a German sentry gagged and bound.
