RED CROSS WORK AT

* THE FRONT.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PREI NONDAY JANUARY 4TH, 1915.

"PRINCIPALLY DISCOMFORT AND

DRUDGERY

The following letter from a Ceylon resident-brother of a well-known resident of Hongkong-who volunteered with his car for Red Cross work at the front, gives an interesting description of the nature

f the work-

Thursday, November 4th. It is just three weeks to-day since I left London, spect a week in Boulogna transfor ring wounded from the railway to the hospitals and from the hospitals to the hospital steamers taking the wounded to England, and then I was attached to a convoy of CO cars and sent up to the Front and ar now "attached, under the Indian Medient Service, to our Indian troops. As I write, U can hear the guns going at two to threo miles away at the trenches and neroplanes aro whirring overhead French, English and German-but the novelty of these fellows has now worn off and one hardly bothers to look at them A shell dropped just where I am sitting a couple of days ago, but they are hardly likely to spot the samo place again, so I have hopes of finishing this letter aundisturbed,

A big fight is going on and the news is good, "but we want more troops. Our mea are having a very uphill game of it, but are doing splendidly. If we could only get sore thing like even numbers, there would be no anxiety as to the result, but I fear it will be some months, before our army is of a reasonable size

ly present existenco takes me back some what to days and is a life made up. principally of discomfort and drudgery, but at the medical men say they don't know whet they would do without us, that we are invalu able, ete,, and this is our reward.

The wounded are brought in the two to: three miles from the trenches at night by horse ambulances; no lights allowed. They are then patched up and we take them in our cars samo 10 to 15 miles to the moarest railway hose where there is a hospital for further treatment and they are then put on rail for Boulogno and shipped to England.

The ronds are awful and all blooked with convoys; and it is tricky work driving with fire wounded men. I take two on stretchers and three sitting up and then there is myself, driving, and my orderly, or seven in all.

31ost of the roads are of rough big cobbles full of holes, and the badly wounded have a deure of a time and you hear their groans over each bump; and for miles sometimes one has to go on lowest speed to save the poor beggars as much pain as possible. The sides of the roads are quagmires. You pass, perhaps half-a-mile of troops, or contos of gigantic motor vans, and in passing these you have to get your right wheel off the road; von at once sink axle deep into soft mul; add to this rain and a dark night, with continual skidding, and you will realise there is little of the joy ride" about the work. How long the car will stand it, I don't know. The springs are usually bent the wrong way owing to the strain, and nothing but careful and slow driving saves the ear. She is a mass of mud from radiator to the back, and it is useless trying to clean her, as half-an- hour after you leave you are as dirty as ever. Our convoy has been split up and there are 15 cars here. I must not mention names of places; otherwise the censor tears up the letters, and we give our word of honour not to give any particulars. The day before resterday the Kaiser was only five miles. away, and he is still no nearer: The pressure where I am is great and we were warned last night we should probably have to clear ont, Less discount on subsidiary coins, but we are still here.
