In the recent Balkan crisis the Montenegrin and Albanian Women showed they were imbued with the fighting spirit, for many hundreds of them tookJOINT
prominent part in the fray B i Less than six years ago the women of Persia showed that they, too, could take their place in the fighting line, for multitudes put on men's uniforms and fought in the battle at Tabriz. The part they took in the fighting was shown by upwards of 16 women being among the 2,000 killed by the enemy.
Even lack of numbers has not deterred women from entering the fighting line. Signora Mario, who died in 1908, was an fastanoo. She played a prominent part in the Italian revolutionary move menta, afterwards writing the life of Garibaldi, besides editing the letters of Mazzini. She was the wife of one of Garibaldi'e officers, and plunged into the activity of the struggles for liberty. She went through the whole of the exciting campaign in the two Sicilies, and rode, up to Naples through Calabria laughing and joking with the over-conquering rod-shirts.

THE FLOATING MINES DANGER.
A REASSURING: STATEMENT. The Coast Inspector at Shangna has issued the following statement:---
November 20th three suspicious objects were sighted in the neighbourhood of the Tungsha Light vessel, of which at all events one was probably a mine. These objects were floating and derelict."

Admiral Lee Ting ring immediately sent out a gunboat to search for the mines, and this vessel patrolled the neighbouring waters for four days without result. Local: shipping firms were informed of the THE Steamship
TH possibility of danger and concerning the precautions that were being taken to meet that possibility.
Following the precedent formed during the Russo-Japanero War no public noti fication on the subject was issued in order to avoid unnecessary and undue alarm of the travelling public. In view, however, of an article which was published in a Jocal paper on the 13th instant giving currency to certain alarmist rumours, this reticence no longer serves a useful purpose.
The following statement is Therefore made :—
"It is considered that if the objects reported were mines they were inines which had broken adrift from the neighbourhood of Tsingtao and drifted down the coast until they came within the influence of the tidal movement off the Yangtze, from which position it is impossible to say whither they might go.
Since November 29th no further supi

Ilaring all the circumstances of the situation in view, it is considered that the chance of further. mines being adrift, off the approaches to this port is very smail.
As indicative of the view of the risk involved, which is held by the Marina Department, it may be stated that the instructions 00 night navigation of Revenue steamers, which was at first imposed, has now been removed..
