regret having to place before you once again accounts showing a debit balance at profit and loss. necount, but a glance at the figures wilk 1 think, "show that the Company is now in a much more satisfactory position than when I last addressed you. The authorised reduction
capital momentarily placed balance of profit and loss on the right side, but this balance was more than absorbed in interest and legal expenses. The latter item is, of course, extraordin ary expenditure and is not recurrent. Oar overdraft is materially reduced, as also is interest account, so that I hope our expenditure in the future will be reduced to a minimum, As mentioned

in the report, some. 070 shares on which it has been found impossible to collect the overdue call have been forfcited, and although the Company does not release the original shareholders from their obligations in connection with these hares, such can now be disposed of for he benefic of the Company. Turning to the accounts of the Nisshin Glogyo Kabushiki Kaisha, copies of which have been circulated, you will notice that during the six months from December to May the working showed. small es of Yen 61.02, after writing off- Men 3,000 to depreciation Account Chis deproctusion has been remitted to us and applied to reduction of our overdraft.. The accounts, I anay say, would. appear To liave been treated in a conservative manner, and the earnings of the final trip, estimated at some Yen 1,000, which were only realized in June, have not been credited, although expenses for the full month are included on the other side. Prices during the period under review ruled low, and returns have bardly come up to expectations, but some further economies in working have been effected, which should be evidenced in later. accounts.. Captain Cribb's agreement with the Company, which expired in May Jast, was not renewed, and a Japanese Captain has since been in command. 1 am pleased to say the now Captain appears to be quite satisfactory, our catches continue well up to average, and a considerable saving in expense effected by the change. The Kuilho Maru, has been well kept up, and is in every way in a thoroughly efficient condition. There is one point which I should mention to you, and that is the fact that the vessel is not insured against War Risk. On the outbreak of the war the vessel was for a short time practically uninsurabig, but we advised our friends in Japan that if they considered there was the slightest risk they should keep the trawler in port. Your Committer have most carefully considered this question, but in view of the fact that other companies have not considered it necessary to cover, and that the Japanese Government is believed to be taking every precaution to protect Japanese vessels against any chance raid by an enetay, we do not deem it necessary to insure, and trust you will emcur with this view. Before closing, I would like to have given you some iden of the probable effect of the war upon the particular industry in which we interested. We wrote some time ago asking our Japanese friends for a special port, but so far have not received any reply, A number of Japanese trawlera have, I believe, been engaged in trawling for mines off Tringtau, and as recent returns have been quite satisfactory, .I am inclined to think that prices have improved, owing to the temporary with- drawal of other vessels. On the other hand, however, we may have to pay more for CHOLERA EPIDEMIC A SEQUEL TO Mr D. L. Baumgarter
