ITS CAUSE AND CURE.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER, 31st, 1914

This distressing complaint so common in all hot countries is caused by the Bile overflowing in the Blood. It is not an in- dependent disorder, but the symptoms of other complaints which cause the Bile to overflow in this manner instead of entering-tho

intestines to perform its mission of aiding in the digestion and assimilation of food. Jaundice causes the skin and eyes to become yellow, and vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation, loss of appetite, bad taste in the mouth, flatulence, belch. ing and pains in the stomach may all be accompanying symptoms. The disordered condition of the Liver is the most common cause of this complaint and a remedy that will reach the Liver is the only effective one. Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills reach the Liver as no other remedy docs, speedily causing the Bile to flow Unable to cal or sleep.

through its proper channel. They get at the cause of the complaint driving the poison out of the blood, and toning the entire system. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT,]

THE WAR.

LONDON, September 17th,

RIFT IN THE LUTE."

Writing of the union of political parties reminds me that the Home Rule Bill has caused the only rift in the lute, and though it is going on the statute book now and will be suspended in operation till after the war, the Opposition made a protest by walking out of the House. It is regrettable that that difference has arison, but the mildness of the divergence merely serves to show how closely the nation is knit together, for this crisis would in normal times have swayed the whole country in gusts of political passion. Both sides of the Irish camp have behaved well, as a matter of fact, under the circumstances. Before the Bill can come into operation Ulsterman and Nationalist will have fought and died together as friends against the common blood will have caemy, and their obliterated the traces of much animosity. The Premier and-the Irish leader are to address a recruiting meeting in Dublin next week, and it is predicted that from now on Irish Nationalists will leap to the colours.

THE ARMY COMMISSARIAT DEPARTMENT, One of the matters that have moved observers to admiration at the front has been our commissariat department. The declaration by Lord Kitchener that our soldiers when fighting would fight on full stomachs has been carried out with s coolness almost as remarkable as the fighting itself of our lads in khaki. There have been cases, of course, when our mea have strayed away from the base, so that they have had hardships, but even they were succoured by friendly peasante in fost cases, But on the whole, whether retiring or advancing, our men have been in touch with the field kitchen and the supplies and to this end a vast collection of London motor buses and faxicabs have been traversing the French roads, and startling Londoners with their familiar aigns as they turned comors unexpectedly Moreover, the British soldiers have their omorgency rations. The French are also well supplied, but the Germans in retreat have been in a bad plight. With all their organisation, their rush to Paris, on which they were led by the astuteness of General Joffre and General French, exhausted their men and put their com munications and food supplies into chaos. The Belgians completed the disorder by attacking the German lines of communica tions and thereafter the Germans got along as best they could on irregular Either they do not carry supplies. emergency ratious or they soon exhausted them, for hundreds, probably thousands have been taken prisoners in a state of extremo hunger, and many of them say they had been eating cats and best-root for days. Now when you do not feed a German his stamina runs to water, so some of his rout may be traced to that. They deserve it all, for the fashion in which they ravaged the country, got drunk on the wine and beer, smashed the belongings of peaceable folk in sheer wantonness, and maltreated all they met, has won for them undying batred and absolved any of their enemies who are moved to take reprisals. For example, there is the well authenticated case of n woman who camo to the door and was asked by a passing Uhlan to give him some bread. She replied truthfully that she. had, none and that the Germans had eaten everything she had as they passed through on their rush to Paris. His reply was to thrust his lance through her breast. That is one of the minor stories: there are many others that are not good reading at the breakfast table and not conducive to the pacification of any wholesome man with red blood in his veins. They thought to terrorise the world, so full were they of the gospel according to Nietszche, Bern- hardi and the rest, and they have only Bucceeded in stiffening the determination and steeling the muscles of the Allies, while neutral nations applaud the batile ery of the foes of Germany Never again!"

THE TALE OF RUSSIAN TROOPS BEING IN

ENGLAND.

The tale about the Russians being in France has a comical aspect. It has caused two camps to be established-one believing that 250,000 Russians have come over from Archangel and are with the Belgians in the field, the other declaring that the story is a myth. All of us had met a man whose wife's cousin knew somebody who had seen the Russians passing by train through some corner of these islands. But nobody was ever able to trace who had actually seen them, till a Swansea engineer declared he travelled with them from Archangel and a correspondent of the Daily News subse quently announced that he had actually teen them in Belgium. It was at that curiously selected moment that the Press Bureau denied the news, and left us all up in the air again. Are the Russians io Belgiam, or in France, or did they pass through England from some Scottish port?

Kind sirs, I pray you ask me another, with all deference to the Press Bureau, for I cannot say,

They yearn interview with Mr. Kier Hardie, Next to a dark night and a swoop down on the German fleet, they long for the pair wee member for Merthyr Tydvil to be handed to them as a thank-offering of the British people. The mention of his name sends howls of derision screaming through any warship, What, they would say and do to him if he chose to pay a visit of inspection to our grand fleet" this deponcat would rather not allow his imagination to encompass in words,

LIGHTS OUT IN LONDON.

London with all the big lights out is a queer sight to the Cockney. The streets have been reduced to the brilliance of some modest country village, what time there is the added effect of searchliglis fooding the sky with silver streaks, and lighting the Thames for miles. These searchlights are fixed on the top of the Admiralty Arch, the top of Charing Cross station, and elsewhere, and they scan the heavens for airships-our own-which are scouting and maneuvring from time to time, to spy out our condition and get our people used to the spectacle. None of us have nerves about it, and we are all of the official injunction observing ubetaining from shooting. We are not likely to get to the stage in which Paris was before the great retreat of the barbarians It was the amusement of the café frequenters to take pot shots at German aviators, with greater danger to the fellow-citizens of Paris than to
