The following statistics have been com- piled from the fortnightly price current report of the Hongkong General Chamber of Commerce

The stocks on October 22nd were:-793 -of-Patna-12-Bonares, 1,1831 Malya, and 191 There were no of Persia and Turkish, stocks of Chinese opium. The exports during the interval to Shanghai, ote,, were 12 Patna, 51 Benares, 38 Malwa, and 79 Persian and Turkish. The balance of stocks of uncertified Bengal opium an October 22nd were 39 Patna and 71 of Benares. The espertations wore ail. In the Bengal market a quiet tone has prevailed and quotations are--Patna, Now 80,325, Old $9,200, V. Old $9,100, Benares New $9,820, Old $8,025, V. Old $8,925. Malwa rancket Limited usiness hus been transacted at $8,400 with heavy extra allowances:

There is a change in the condition of Feathers, and as to Ginger, there has been atore inquiry and a little Gasiness doing. The pusitions of Galangal and Cassia Oil 'are unchangel, and

reliabla -prices are ́abtainable. The Star Aniseed "market is quiet, with small parcels being taken up. Ground Nuts with shells are quoted at 88.20 per.pied; there is no change in the condition. Wood Oil is given as being nominal, and Human Hair quoted at prices per picul f.o.b. Hongkong No change has taken place in Yunnen Tin. In Quicksilver, Snigou Cassia, Gall Nuts and Bristles the prices are changed and nothing is doing.

Taking into consideration the financial stringency prevailing, elearances have been fairly satis factory, Quotations are:-No. 10s at 88 to 8114, No. 10% at 806 to $114, No. 10s at $108 to 8124, 20s at 8110 to $143. Arrivals 700, bales. Sales 3,500 bales. Shipments INDO-CHINA BRICKS. TILES. PIPES. SHIPBUILDERS. SALVORS AND REPAIRERS, BOILERMAKERS.

1,200 bales, Unfold stock 54,000 bales. Bargains 40,000 ales. There is nothing to ropart in relating to Woollen. No Cotton is in stock and quotatious are naaina). The Hamburg-American Line steamer Bethania was captured by a British cruiser on September 10th when she was two days out from Charleston. The prize, which was taken to Kingston, Jamaica, had aboard 600 tons of coal and a six months' supply of provisions for the German cruisers Dresden and Karlsruhe. The Bethania had been equipped as an auxiliary cruiser, but threw her armament overboard on sighting her pursuer. The crew was composed of 500 reservists. They were placed in various detention camps in The Admiralty reports that Jamaica. most of the prisoners aboard the Bethania are from the crew of the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. The men escaped in a collier when the liner was sunk hy & British cruiser.

LIMITING THE COTTON CROP

The Egyptian Minister of Agriculture has stated that as probably only four million cantars of the present cotton crop are likely to be sold the next crop should not exceed this amount. Therefore a new a. million law will be promulgated reducing the area under cultivation by
