A DIPLOMATIC CAPTAIN.

FRENCH TROOPS BROUGHT OUT UNDER GERMANS' NODES,

Mr. M. L. Axworthy, of Plymouth, who has just returned home from Mespotamia, has had some exciting experiences while in the French liner Sagħalien, of the

Messageries Maritimes Company, which encountered the German vessels Goeben and Breslaw in the Dardnielles,

Soon after the liner entered the Daradanelles she was held up by a Turkish gunboat, and the captain was warned that It was dangerous to proceed, es there were many

mines about. The Sughalien anchored, and next morning those on board, discovered that their vessel was sandwiched between the now famous German warships Groeben and Breslån. · A pinnace from the Bread containing several armed officers and men alongside. The men boarded the liner, smashed the wireless room and warned the captain that if he attempted to move, his vessel would be sunk, After having been to all intents a prisoner of war for throo days the Soghalien was boarded by the Turkish commander, who ordered the Tessel to clear out forthwith.

CULTYMY

The captain informed him of the throat of the Breslau, and refused to move, seeing that in addition to the 700 Frenchi troops there were a large number of women and children and even babies in arms on board. Negotiations seemed to have come to a standstill when the captain agreed to take his ship out if the Governor and his staff would remain on board the Saghalien u til she was three miles out- side the entrance. After a long consulta- tion this was reluctantly agreed to, and the Saghalien got through without further hindrance. When well clear the Governor and his staff were transferred to the Turkish gunboat, and the Saghalien pra- ceeded on her voyage to Marseilles, everyone marvelling why the Germans should have made no attempt to bar her progress. The query was not long in being answered, for within an hour the vessel Officers on duty: Capt. Armstrong, was again pulled up, this time by a British Lient. Norrington and Lieut. Lind-cruiser squadron, and a boat was launched and came alongside, and the ship's papers sell.

were examined.............

5.15 pm, Recruits Artillery Battery and Centre Section H. G. Co. fall in at Short Range, Kennedy Road, for Musketry under S. H. Murphy, D.C.L.I

5.30 p.m. Beauts Company Commander.
