"GUARANTEED

UNDER THE PURE FOOD AND DRUGS ACT, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

On every bottle of Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills sold in the United States of America there is placed an extra label, bearing a number and the word "Guaranteed" which denotes that the proprietors of Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills guarantee that they contain nothing that is not in strict accordance with the Pure Food and Drugs Act. It is further guaranteed that Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills comply with the regulations of the Department of Health,” both as to the standard of purity of the ingredients used in their manufacture, and als that they are a good, wholesome remedy for the purposes they are advertised for. Dr. Morse's Indian Root Pills are a purely vegetable sugar- conted medicinal preparation, carefully compounded by experts, and are manu- factured on the premises under the direct supervision of the proprietors. The care taken in the production of these Pills, is illustrated by the manner in which they are packed. Instead of being put up in cheap wonden boxes that absorb poisonons and other substances they are packed in glass bottles at a et of five or six times that of wonden boxes. The extra cost is more than made up in the satisfaction of knowing that the Pills reach the public just as they left the laboratory, unaffected by moisture or climatic changes and free from contamination by contact with any foreign matter.

COMPANY MEETING,

YOKOHAMA SPECIE BANK.

· HALF-YEARLY MEETING.

The sixiy-ninth regalar general meeting. of shareholders of the Yokohama Specie Bank was held on the 11th inst, when Mr. Inouye delivered the following speech anent the conditions prevailing in economic circles at home and abroad and the results of the business of the bank during the first half of the current year:-..

HONEY AND SHARE MARKETS,

"During the term ander review, the fall in the price of rice has decreased the purchasing power of farmers, culminat- ing in a decline in enterprises and slackness in the share market. Commerce was also dall, as a result of which stocka in warehouses have gradually increased, and complaints of business depression have been heard everywhere, both in town and country..

On the other hand, however, the import trade has gradually decreased, kile exports have correspondingly increased, thus giving rise to the belief that n balance between importa and exports, which has long been desired by the Japanese Government and people int has not been realised, might become an accomplished fact, that the prevailing depression is simply the forerunner of normal trade conditions in the future and therefore should not give risg 11 pessimism.

SLACKNESS IN MONEY MARKET.

#x2

In the money market slacknes prevailed and the rate of interest has declined wing to the decreased demand for funds, which in turn was occasioned by the depression in economic circles following the tranquillity which prevailed at the end of the previous term coupled with the flotation of a foreign short term lean, amounting to Y.25,000,000, as well as the cash redemption of a large amount. of Exchequer Bunds and national loans. Tarious localities, however, several small banks have been forced temporarily suspend business, while in Osaka the gucation of relieving an influential bank occurred. This gave rise te uneasiness in the money markets conorned, but fortunately measures of relief were available and no serious result was brought about. Owing to uneasiness. prevailing since the political change, however, bankers generally are exercising caution, and are suffering because they

of amtinne to hold large deposits at a high rate of interest, while loans do not balance these deposits. With the enhanced demand for funds for the import of raw cotton, purchase of cloth for summer wear, manufacture of tea and reling of raw silk from about April, the money market temporarily became tight, and the rate of interest showed an upward tendency, but the general trend of affairs inclined to dullness, and the term came to an end without any particular tight- ness being witnessed.

CONDITIONS AUTOAD.

In economie circles abroad it was conjectured in all European countries that roomgre and industry would gradually recover after the settlement of the Balkan question in the autumn of last year. But, contrary to expectations, no signs of activity have been witnessed, and inasmuch as the demand for funds was so small, that the slackness in the money market increased, the Bank of Englandi, on January 8th, lowered its rate from 3 to 4.5 per crat., and during the same month again lowered the rate on iwo occasions, it remaining stationary The Imperial German at per cent.
