It commences with seal soup, continues with roast beef, Yorkshire podding, boras radish sauce, and ende with plum pudding, mince pies, and, above all, snap-dragon. Now and again, of course, they could afford themselves such luxuries. Everyone will be glad to know that on mid-winter day they were able to include among their drinks sherry, champagne, and brandy punch, and to make play with cigara, cigarettes, and tobacco galore...

In a handsome volume, adorned with many illustrations, is published by Mosers. Smith Elder the third volume of the South Polar Times. It is called the third because two volumes have Already appeared, produced when Cap tain Scott led his first expedition in the Discovery Tho third volume is a record laughable, pathetic, good-humoured, and, above all, full of the rarest spirit of fellowship composed between April and October, 1913, at the ontset of the last and fatal expedition which won conspicuous honour at the cost of heroic lives. It is natural enough that a num ber of friends, who are exiles from their home, should publish a magazine of their own, and adorn it with coloured pictures caricatures, silhouettes, and photographs, the whole bound together as a typewritten volume, which is here reproduced in facsimile. The editor, Mr. Cherry Garrard, tells us in brief introduction all that wo want to know as to the circumstances in which this unique book was put together. This volume, he says, was originally produced in three parts during the first winter and spring which Captain Ecott's expedition spent down South," that is to say, between the end of the depot-laying journey in April and the start of the Polar journey in Novem- ber, 1911. The contributions were sent in to the editor anonymously; at least that was the theory of the vonture." As a matter of fact, however, most of the con tributors came to the editor with their manuscripts in their hands, and with deprecatory remarks as to the valire of what they had done. Some took to writing naturally and easily; others found it very hard work, especially Cap- tain Oates, who sat hour after bour, with a vory worried look upon his face, writing a letter to the editor protesting against the noisy way in which the evening lectures were conducted. Borne times considerable trouble was taken to preserve anonymity, Dr. Wilson, the chief of the scientific staff and also theThough we're wrapped in folds of deerskin, artist responsible for the illustrations, asked one of his friends to typewrite his porr, The Barrier Silenc, and to send it in as from some person unknown in order that the contribution might be judged solely on its merits.
