THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, TUESDAY, AUGUST 25TH, 1814

THE PLIGHT OF TOURISTS

IN EUROPE.

San Francisco papers are to hand beer. ing dates to the 4th inst. From them wo extract the following:-

LONDON, August 1st. · London is fast filling with Americans who have been compelled to forego their Continental tours. Every cross-channel steamer from France and Belgium is fill- ed with American tourists who, on the advice of their Ambassadors, Ministers or Consuls, have left the Continental cities and various resorts on a minute': notice for England, which country.affords them their only chance of reaching home.

Inability to get money is another inccutive for their desire to leave the Continent. Express companies': cheques, which Americans universally use, foreign tours, can not be converted into. Currency except at the highest rates of discount.

DRITISH AND DUTCH PROFIT.

The Cunard, the White Star and other British and the Dutch lines did an immenso

many business, accipting. passengers who had intended to sail on Hamburg-American liners, all of which had been definitely withdrawn from the

service.

Maximum rates were charged by all the companies and many passengers paid high premiums for tickets to those who had them but preferred taking the profit in the hope of getting home later at a lower rate.

The French transatlantic line and the North German. Lloyd still accepted book- ings for their passengers to-day, but most. of the would-be passengers seemed to prefer British vessels.

WB. Crane, the American actor, was among hundreds who hurriedly left Paris Friday night. He said there was veritable panic among Americans in the French capital.

FLIGHT OF AMERICANS.

21,

On the advice of the Consul, who told me that if I did not go away immediately. probably would be marooned in Paris for weeks, I hurriedly packed and rushed to the station," said Crane "There I found the depot crowded with Americans acting on the same impulse. Not only did they want to got home, but they found their American money cheques unnegoti ablo. The trains were jammed. Those who had gladly paid full first-class fares, but who arrived late and found only standing room in third-class ears, did not complain, because they were so anxious to get away.

Nobody got any sleep until we arrived in London in the early-hours of the morning. We were severni hours late, on account of the train being held up on the Fronul lines to enable the passage of trains loaded with French Boldiers."

A few of those who arrived early were able to get berths on the steamers sailing for New York, Boston and Canadian ports, but the majority joined the big crowd of Americans who are already fifling the London hotels.

Later a boat from the Continent brought another large contingent of Americans, who felt satisfied until they discovered that their American cheques were almost as useless in London as in the Continental cities Regular customers at hotels and restaurants to-night who did not have gold or silver were politely invited to sign bills for payment at some future day, as по currency could be given in change for notes or cheques. Strangers were com pelled to pay their bills in currency, neither cheques nor notes being acceptable.

In one famous resort of the Americans: here there was a continual stream of men offering £5 (823) nutes in payment for 10-cent drinks and asking for change, only to be told there was no gold in the house. Some of them got the drink for nothing, but most of them were able to produce silver when pressed.

Such scenes were never before witnessed in the West End of London, where ordinarily the notes of any country of the world are changed without demur,

Prominent American-residents met here today and organized a mission to assist their cumpatriots who may be stranded on the Continent through the paralysis of the ordinary banking facilities. They will send men to the Continent provided with money to help Americans to reach home, if the continental governments will permit the agents to enter. It is believed that passports and letters from the Ambassador explaining the purpose of the mission will enable the agents to carry out the work.
