In 2707 there was in France & young general who, as a result of his continuous victories over his country's enemies, had, by a long series of engagements, dazzled France into complacency, and had in atituted French control over a large por- tion of what is now Italy and negotiated a treaty with Austria by which thot country gava ap her possessions in Bel- gium and Lombardy.
At that period of the world's history the intellect of France found its sphern upon the battlefield. They felt that they were fighting a defensive war and that France was the mighty stake at issue.
France was then at war with England, Austria and Sardinia. Italy was then made up of patches of Austrian territory and patty States under the influence of Austria, all of which he satisfactorily disposed of, with the exception of Eng land, which had successfully chekmated France in all her schemes of colonial bggrandizement
After a relative peace had been secured as a result of his continued military operations against this European coali tion, war again broke out and France occupied Hanover and the Kingdom of Naples This resulted in the formation- of the third coalition against Franco. Austria and Russia became provoked into an alliance with England against France and Sweden Portugal and Naples also became parties to: the coalition practically, though not formally:
An attack upon the coast of Britain was Franco's great aim and elaborate plans were laid to carry it into effect. But the plans failing, France turned her attention again to the war on the con- tinent and the French grand army was marched into Southern Germany.
The result was glorious for French arms, but England humbled her upon the seas.

Russia soon became offended and turned against France leaving the latter country in splendid isolation. Then England again drow Russia into an alliance with the stated purpose of reducing France to what she was prior to the revolution out of which she had risen mighty and strong. Austria came into the coalition with Sweden.
This brought on, war with Russia which resulted with France's first real setback.
