Like our own champion, the American defenders have gone further in the way of claborate preparation than ever before. Largoly this is due to the fact that American designers have at last been left free to enter in open competition for the building of vessels of this class. Herreshoff Company, William Gardner (designer of the winner of 1905), and Owen, of Boston (not greatly known in Britain but thought much of by the Americans), are the designers of the respective defenders, and each of them has his distinct view-point Lightness of rig and construction is the chief feature of the Herreshoff vacht. Indeed, it was thought she had overdone it in these matters. But she has kailed for over a week in strong breezes, and has coms off well. By no means unimportant details are the Scandinavian nationality and experience of her skipper and crew.
