LONDON June 10th. THE DERDY AND THE CLUETTA 6WEEP. We are still hearing rumours of what: the Jockey Club will do to control the starters for the Derby, on the assumption that the number of starters for the last race was influenced by the pressure brought to bear on owners of horses with- out a-ghost- of a pretension of being a Derby winner in order that participators in the Calcutta Sweep might benefit. The assertions on this head have been very generally accepted, along with the attendant criticism that in consequence of this crowd of starters the best horse. stands a chance of losing the be

WM. POWELL,

therefore fair to recall that long before! 5 10 the Calcutta Sweep was anything more than local to India the Derby often attracted enormous fields. On this uther side of the case, also, I would quote the letter of one who knows sport inside out, as the saying is. He writes: ----

May I point out that the Calcutta Derby Sweep was drawn on Saturday night, the 29rd ult,, after dinner. The drawing was open only to members of the Royal Calcutta Turf Club, and the names of the holders of tickets who draw horses are not called out.. If, therefore, the drawer of a horse is unt in Calcutta at the time the drawing is held, it is impossible for him to hear before Monday at the earliest if he is fortunate enough to draw a horse. This gives him but a few hours to "sgoore" the owner to h run the horse. Unless the drawer is a tucky raving man who has connections that can get into immediate touch with the owner, say, from India, this is a practical impos albility. Immediate intimation is not sent

of horses. This year starters would, I take

it, receive about five hundred pounds, and the amount for starters, ie, ten per cent. of the total sweep, decreases with the bumber of starter. It will readily be seen that it is impossible for the Calcutta Sweep- to infuence more than one or two starterü at the outside, and the cause of the large field should be looked for nearer home,

GERMAN SHIPPING COMPETITION. Bonsational journalism has found another scare honding. This time it all "bame" about because the North German Lloyd have decided to continue the Australian service, on the strong desire of the Kaiser, and to extend its service to New Zealand. Immediately there ros in Flest Street and its tributary thoroughfares —especially the latter visions of danger to British commerça "Bo a friend of mine applied to a pro- minent shipowner for information and' this is about what he said:

“Yes, we are supposed to be in danger again! Every now and then the newspaper render is assured that we are in a bad way, and that some other nation is robbing us of our ocean carrying trade. Yet our share in the world's merchant shipping is a good half, and I don't think that is so bad for a ruined State. These panies, since certain sections of the Press acquired expert knowledge of nautical matters wo years ago when the Titanie, sank are becoming more frequent. The Press, which sometimes, but not always, knows starboard from port, and advocatos hydraulic buffers on a ship's bowa to cushion collisions, now Bees the German merchant service taking our trade where once we were supreme

failure has decided to compete for the 100,000 tons of German goods which bitherto

have gone to New Zealand by British vessels, the Rted Ensign is again in danger I see that one famous controller of much British tonnage is alleged to have said that the Germans have practically captured the trade to the West coast of South America, the Brazils, and the Argentino.' It is quite true the Germans are making a bold bid for a fair share of that traffic, They recently put on the River Plate route the finest vessel which now goes there, the Cap Trafalgar, of 18,000 tona. But anyone with any knowledge of our British lines in those trades is aware that, at the least, we are maintaining our interest in things. With the exception of the Cap Trafalgar and the Cap Finisterre, also of the Hum burg South-American Line, the Germans baye little to compare with the ships of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, which has among its fleet of express steamers fiva great liners in the Plate tride. In addition, Honlders and Nelsons cater with excellent intermediate and regular steamers. And is: there any German fine which can compare with the Pacifie Steam Navigation Company?"

Nevertheless, the Germans are extreme- not ly active now, and their eyes are merely on the West and Southern seas, but on the Far East...

HOW TO AVOID SHIPPING DISAST The jocular reference to hydr... buffers in the above statement reminds me t of two suggestions that have come out as a result of the disaster to the Empress of Ireland. One is the proposal to try belt-of-six-inch rubber in the vital parts of big ships. That has come from a man in the rubber trade who is famous for the blending of business shrewdness with inventive imagination. The other is from Mr. Joseph Conrad, the famous
