said Mr. Silva-Netto, I desire, in the first place, to warmly thank you and the members of the Club Lusitano for the very cordial welcome which you have extended this afternoon to myself and the other members of the teams which com- peted for this Challenge Shield which I am about to present. In my early days in this Colony there was no organized Chess Club in existence, but the late Mr. J. J. Francis, K. C., very kindly placed his rooms at the disposal of those who desired to indulge in a game of chess, At a later date, probably about 18 years ago, the Hongkong Chess Club was found- ed, with Colonel The O'Gorman as the frst President, and when he left the Colony 1 succeeded to that post. A few years ago it occurred to me that it might be a good thing in the interests of chess, and might help to promote enthusiasm for the game, if a Chess Challenge Shield was instituted, and accordingly, at the beginning of last year, I put up this Shield for competition to be won outright Club Lusitanu by any team which succeeded in obtain.K.
