SEQUEL TO SHANGHAI MURDER.
ME. NEUMANN CLAIMS $18,000 AGAINST THE SHANGHAI LAND"00"
At the Shanghai, Supreme Court on the 22nd June, the case was mentioned of Richard Neumann v. The Shanghai Land Investment Co., Ltd.
The plaintiff's claim is for 848,000. Shanghai syece, damages suffered by the plaintiff by reason of the negligence of the defendants, their servants, and agents, in negligently and unskilfully making alterations in and additions tes the premises known as Nos. 14 and 4,, Astor RoadShanghai, whereof the defendants are owners and landlords and the plaintiff is tenant and occupier. Particulars of such negligence and damages are as follows:
(1) The parties agreed on July 8, 1913, in consideration of a higher rent to be paid by the plaintiff to executo in accordance with a plan drawn by Messrs. -Atkinson & Dallas, defendants' architects," certain alterations and additions to the premises aforesaid, it being a term of the agreement that plaintiff and his servante should continue-during-the-execution of the alterations and additions to use and occupy, the premises.
(2.) Defendants began such alterations and additions or or about July 10, 1913.
(3.)--Defendants' servants and agents on December 15th, 1913, improperly and in an unworkmanlike manner broke through the party wall between that part of the premises known as No. 14, Astor Road and that part known as No. 4, Astor Road.......
(4)-Defendants further negligently left the openings aforesaid, one upon the ground floor and ann upon the first floor;

(5.)Defendants failed to provide and maintain at night a proper and adequate watch over the premises and further neglected to keep and maintain proper and sufficient lights in and about the said works.
(8.)-Plaintiff gave notice as to all of these acts of negligence and the loss and damage likely to arise therefrom, but the defendants, thoir servants and agente neglected to amend the same.
(7.)-By reason of the negligence and default of the defendants as aforesaid, certain arily disposed persons, to the plaintiff unknown, on the night of January 22nd entered No. 14, Astor Road in the use and occupation of the plaintiff as aforesaid and stole and carried away therefrom 80,000 in cash, and jewellery to the value of 340,000, the property of plaintiff. Plaintiff further claims costs and other relief.
Upon the application of Mr. II. P. Wilkinson, who appears for the plaintiff, his Lordship ordered the filing of a defence, and upon the application of the defendants Counsel, Mr. R. E. S. Gregson, an order was made for the deposit of $250 as security for costs. $250 had previously been depositad.

The Straits Times says:-The Hon. Mr. E. C. Ellis has been connected with Singapore for the past eighteen yours, having come from Hongkong in 1800, to join the legal firm of Messrs. Drew & Napier, of which be is now the head. He was born in London in 1865, and after receiving his education in a private school in Devonshire he was articled co-a-firm- of solicitors. In 1889 he became qualified as a solicitor in England, and journeying East to Hongkong in 1881 practised there for five years. Mr. Ellis has been a member of the Legislative Council for quite a number of years, and he has acted as Attorney-General for the Colony. He has taken a keen interest in the Volunteer movement. He first joined the Maxim detachment of the Volunteer a Artillery in Hongkong in 1894, and in 1899 was gazetted Second Lieutenant. On coming to Singapore he was trans- ferred to the Singapore Volunteer Rifles as Lieutenant, and in 1902 was appointed Captain of the Eurasian and Chinese Company. Early in 1907 he received his field rank as Major commanding the infantry units in Singapore.
