NEED FOR HELLING ORGANIZATION.
The following letter appears in The Times:
Sir I have read with very great interest a letter in The Times Engineer- ing Supplement of March 13th, by a subject of British ongineering in China, correspondent in Yunnanfu, on the
and as the only resident engineer in the Province of Szechuan 1 beg, with your permission, to supplement your corres pondent's remarks with a few of my own. Your correspondent certainly hits the mark when he says what is required in China to-day is a selling organization of British manufacturers. An intelligence burcan may be a very fine thing, but without an efficient method of placing his wares before the Chinese public our engineering manufacturer cannot be said to be much better off now than he was before the establishment of the British Engineers Association, At present be relies, with a few exceptions, on the efforts of merchant firms to secure orders for him, and while this systemn probably works satisfactorily in large foreign trade centres, no merchant firm can be expected to maintain a high-salaried

At present engineering business is handicapped by lack of engineering knowledge on the part of the prospective. buyer himself. Consequently it is very desirable for British manufacturers whose products are suitable for this market, nad who wish to participate in to institute and maintain a permanent exhibit of their machinery either in Chungking or Chengtu, nd also to provide a number of native assistants as well as a technical man to instruct pur chasers in the use of their appliances. This would not necessitate an extensive- stock, but sufficient to bring the name of the manufacturer and the type of his machine before prospective users
