THE GENERAL ELECTION.
Never in the history of political France have the Socialists been known to sweep everything before them as they have done at this last Goneral Election. Their. victory has been complete, and they have only themselves to thank for it se already remarked, they alone had an object in view, and they alone ware thoroughly organised France has never until now been in the hands of the Socialists, and the thought of it is sufi cient to make one feel down-hearted. All parties were given fair-play, both on the occasion of the first and second ballot, there is nothing more to be done now that the country has spoken but to bow to Fate, and abide by the consequences. Very few indeed expected such a turn of events. The polling this time was larger than in previous years. Thongh the Colonial results are not yet known,
the it cannot obliterate the fact that Socialists have won all along the line; the sooner a block is formed to resist the Socialist advance which threatens the interests, belief and faith of France at

Socialists are more united than ever, and
after their signal victory are resolved to lose no time to make their influence. felt. One of their first moves, according to the Journal, is to put forward a candidate for the Presidency of the Chamber in place of M. Deschanel-its present able President. Their somewhat Cromwellian plans are likely to bring the new Chamber to an early doom; no Une sces how political equilibrium can be maintained for any length of time. The Government and its supportera maintain that they do not anticipate any differences in the first month of the Legislature. So far the Doumergue. Cabinet does not intend to resign; but circumstances may occur at any time which would bring this to pass. Should the Socialists present a motion for the immediate consideration of a system authorisin the disbanding of the con- scripte, the 1913 class in 1915, the Government will oppose it frmly and will not hesitate to submit a vote of confidence. Probably one of the most noticeable facts about the newly-consti- tuted Chamber is the solid majority for the Three Years Service Bill When one comes to think that no fewer than 10 different fattiona solicited the favour of the country, one cannot wonder at the electorate becoming confused. This unintelligible medley of groups did not improve the occasion and too many cooks spoil the broth. Out of the 509 members returned, the Socialists- who were themselves divided into four sections-claim 333, thus gaining 106. Beats and losing only 74. Time will prove whether this victory implies a corresponding growth of Socialism in this country. Had the other candidates drawn up as comprehensive an electoral
