For reasons which every wousa knows the period which comes between the ages of 40 and 45-when the “Change of Life" takes place is the most dangerous time in women's life Upon whether or not the successfully passes through this "Change" depends her fatare physical welfare.
"Some jears ago my wife, who is now 50 years old, passed through an exceedingly trying experience," says Mr. W. P. de Alwis, landed proprietor, residing at Peliyagodde,, nesr Colombo, Ceylon: "Her whole body became

These and other symptoms common to many ladies of her age.brought my wife to the vorge of despair. It was indeed pitiful to sea her, formerly so energetic and bright-spirited, now reduced to an invalid.

FASHIONS AND FANCIES.
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY. MAY Mrn. 1014,
When dark blue serge first came into fashion, it owed its immediate success to Queen Alexandra, then Princess of Wales. As became the Bea-King's daughter, she at once adopted the material associated with the Navy, and made it her principal wear when at Windsor, Balmoral, or when yachting. Until then serge had beerf regarded as fit only for the woar of railway porters, but the manufacturers, seeing how matters were trending, soon produced it in pure wool and in different patterns.
NAVY SERGE
The Jute M. Worth, of Paris, expressed astonishment and disgust at the idea of gentlewomen wearing such a material, and denounced it and the tailor-made to which it led as only fit for stable boys," But now Paris is, if possible, more zealous in praise of navy serge than even England itself, and her graceful ladies dion it in many different forms.
One costume consists of a plain skirt. slit up four inches on either side at the
ankles, and an over-dress arranged in wide, flat pleats from an inch or so below. the neck to the line of the knees. This garment is held in at the waist (normal position) by a band of the serge (a soft, fine make) with perpendicular rows of mother of pearl buttons at intervals the whole way round. At the neck, slightly cutaway, there is a white lawn collar and a knot of navy blue ribbon. Also in navy blue serge is a long, rather full coat with triple collars, each bordered with black ribbon. Even the brigand cloak is seen in blue serge or cloth, finished with the correct high velvet collar and lined with flowered white satin.
ANGLO-PARISIENNES,
A gown in the same popular material has a full tunic smocked at the waist in front, the smockings headed by a pointed band of white piqué, matching the wide tand-away collar and narrow cuffs just appearing beneath the long, plain, close fiting sleeves. With quite surprising unanimity the smart women of Paris are wearing these costumes in the morning and afternoon, but particularly for what the French term "le footing matinal." Walking is another English importation that has become quite fashionable in Paris during the last few years.
It is whispered that Parisienues are really tired of the ugly and inconvenient exaggerated gowns of a couple of months ago, and that they are taking refuge in blue sorge with trimmings of braid or bins folds of black satin. The serge gowns button down the front, a satisfactory feature of the early season. For after

THE NORMAL WAIST.
The waist is in the natural position, a
fashion that is now entirely re-established. though a minority of smart women still eling to the Empire line. A chestnut- brown taffetas is made with a tunic, short in front, pointed at the back, of tartan in brown, amber, and cream-colour, not puffed out round the hips as some of them are, but falling in graceful, natural lines. The upper part, forming, the bodice, is turned back, with collars, revers, and cufis of the brown silk piped with amber satin. | There is a cape accompanying this gown, made of very fine, light brown cloth, lined with the same tartan as the tunic and with a collar of striped cream and brown velvet, Tan coloured shoes, stockings, and gloves are worn with this dainty: teilette.
THE NEW ORDE. One of the most sensible of recent fashions is the Salomé shoe with its band round the ankle, which keeps the shoe up on the heel. This is the more neces sery as the front part of the amart, up-to-date shoe is much cut away, so much so that it is really difficult to keep it on the foot. White, gazelle, and antelope, hesides the well-known tan, are the favourite colours for footgear. Later on, more pronounced tints will be seen, blue, green, red, purple, matching the gown or its trimmings. .
The high heel persists in Paris, the wearers little guessing the trouble they are laying up for themselves, their spines and their knees.-X. AND Z. in the Globe.
