RUBBER PRODUCTION AND

YEARLY INOREASE IN THE DEMAND.

BASIS FOR VALUATION.

[BY A CORRESPONDENT OF THE TIMES"}

It is somewhat curious that there is still a widespread belief in the danger of the production of plantation rubber outstripping the consumera domnude, There seems to be in reality no such danger, at least until the present planted arca has been largely increased and the increased aron brought into boaring. And as no large increase in planting is at present taking place, or likely to take place for a long time to come, this question is practically shelved for the next 10 years. The existing misconcop- tion results from not discriminating between the two sources of the present supply. Last year only about 40 per cent. of the world's requirements came from plantation sourcee, and 60 per cent, from wild production. This year the proportion would be about half and half if the supply of wild rubber should be main tained, but it is extremely probable that it will fall off owing to the unremunera tive prica, and the total production may not exceed that of last year. In that case the normal increase of consumption will be unprovided for. One thing at least seems quite certain, that we cannot do. without wild rubber now, nor for as far ahead as we can at presont sce. The average increase in the world's consump tion for the four years 1900-13, as I shall, show presently, has averaged more than 10 per cent, per annum, in spite of the 1123-9 high average price ruling for that period. It is unlikely that this rate of increase will diminish in the future, and it may vory possibly be exceeded,

But this is looking a long way ahead, and is only useful no far as it tends to show that an investment in rubber shares should not be regarded as a temporary venture to be quitted when a good profit is available. What is more interesting to most people is the immediate future of the rubber industry, and I think there are probabilities in this direction which are as yet hot appreciated. The follow ing figures tabulate for the last five years the total production and consumption of wild and plantation rubber and the average market price for plantation in cách gear :

1-Plantation "produtsiou: 1909, 4,000 tons; 1910, 8,000 tons; 1011, 14,700 tons; 1912, 28,600 tons, 1918, 47,000

I may now suggest that an appreciation 05 ANDRESE of 100 per cent, tu 200 per cent. may with equal reason be anticipated in the shares of those companies which will be able to earn £10 per acre or more upon & market valuation of £100 per acre. This is also a bold prophecy, but the governing conditions appear to me to be as well upon the former defined as they were occasion.

In full production of 400lb. per acre, which is a moderate standard for good cost of 18. per estates, at an all in b, which will undoubtedly be attained in very many cases, an estate should make a net profit of £10 per acre. Some of the best estates will probably produce as an exception 500lb. per acre, and the average selling price may be somewhat in excess of the 2s. 6d. basis.

Moreover, 1913 was an exceptional year. Owing to the strike and floods in America and the restriction of financial facilitics the consumption in the United States was reduced in the spring by about 15,000 tons, and allowing for subsequent partial recovery it is estimated by at least 5,000 tons on the completed year. This was sufficient to upset the balance for the time being, and gave an opportunity to the

London's popular medical weekly, writes: The Editor of the FAMILY DOCTOR, " and supplies for 1914 will probably be reduced by a quantity equalling the patural increase from the plantations If this should be so, and the total produc tion for 1814 should only about equal that of 1913, a shortage of 10,000 to 15,000 tons may be seen, a quantity which the existing stock would be quite unable to maki good. And it is not easy to see how such a depletion in the stock could be rectified oven in 1915, for it seems to be fairly evident that a 10 percent. inezease in Monetmption will practically. absorb the increase which can be expected from the Mid East, the rest of the world being unable to respond to the growing demand. Moreover, the latter may possibly refuse to be limited to 10-1 cent.

We have seen hosts of letters bearing testimony to the truly wonderful cures by Clarke's Blood Mixture. It is the first Blood Purifier that Science and Medical Skill have brought to light, and we can with the utmost confidence recommend it to our subscribers end the public generally,"

The net result of all these considerations scaras to be that for at least 10 years to come the minimum price of plantation rubber must be the equivalent of the average cost price of the wild rubber which will have to be supplied in order to make up the total quantity required by the consumers.
