To study this problem is the purpose of a committee of the British Association for the Advancement. of Science, and advantage will be taken of the eclipse of the sun of August 21st, which will be total for two minutes in Southern Russia. Two main points will receive attention. It is supposed, in the first place, that the absorption and refraction will be different from the ordinary in the umbra and penumbra; and, secondly, that electric waves--both natural and artificial may be affected favourably or unfavourably in ways not yot discovered,

Both plant and animal tissues aro injured by prolonged exposure to X-rays, but under proper: regulation it appears that highly beneficial offects may be pro- duced. In experiments in Germany, Dr. Schwartz found Do appreciable results from an exposure of young plant sprouts for 30 seconds, while an exposure of five minutes bad a decided influence in retarding development. The best time for beneficial action, proved to be about 150 seconds, and by such exposure to the rays the plants were so stimulated that in three weeks their height reached twice That of unexposed plants. The effects on the human body were subject to similar GOING AND RETURNING WITHIN PERIOD 1ST JUNE 31 OCT. regulation. The vitality of the tissues is diminished in the case of woun 13, but

Peat-coke in Germany is proving serviceable in many ways. It is not only valuable for generating electricity at moorland stations, but is much used by blacksmiths and for various metallurgical purposes, especially as a substitute for JOINT SCHEDULE OF SAILINGS TO AND FROM JAPAN PORTS. MATL charcoal in producing high-grade iron. A new turf-coking plant at Elisabeth- Fehn. Oldenburg, converts 39 tons of peat into 9 of coke, with gas and tar as by-products. Specially designed ovens are used, and the gas generated is made to heat the retorts and to generate electric current to drive the peat dredging machinna The tar yields creo- sote oil, gas oil, paraffin, sulphuric acid, and ammonia.

FLASHING ROAD-SIGNALS.

The safety besson under test by the British Road Board is a lamp giving 50 to 80 flashes a minute. These are visible about 200 yards, and are intended to givu warning of danger to motor and other vehicles. The signal promises to be extensively adopted--in the British Icles and elsewhere if the trial light at Sidcup, on the road from London to Folkestone, proves as successful 25 expected. The cost of maintaining such

a light is not large, being estimated at not more than $7 or 88 a year.
