RAW SILK FROM JAPAN TO

MOSCOW VIA BIBERIA.

H.M. Commercial Attaché at Yokohama (Mr. E.-F. Crows, CM.G) reports that for a long time, past, there have been rumours that the Russian railways were attempting to make arrangement whereby silk could be shipped via Siberia to Moscow, thus affecting a considerable Baving in

time the rate of freight would be too high to but it was thought that minke this route a commercial possibility, and it was also considered doubtful whether the railway could deal with

leal with large enough quantition of silk.

Arrangements, however, have now been made by the Osaka Shosong Kaisha with the Imperial Japanese Railway and the Siberian Railway by which it will be beginic this season to Sp silk from Yokohama to Moscow Tsuruge and Vladivostock at rates of freight which, including all transhipoient charges, will work out at 272,35 yen per about £27, 106, per ton compared with 200 yen, which would be the rate on the same basis by the houseward conference steamers. The time occupied in transit will be about 20 daya by passenger train and 31 days by freight express, as com pared with about 40 days to Moscow vi Marseilles. No consignment weighing lous than 10 kilogu. (about 22 lbs.) will be accepted. It is thought that the insur ance rates will not be much in excess of those charged via Suez

Shipments will have to be delivered at the Yokohama railway station,

and through bills of lading to Moscow will be issued on the railway company's receipt. Consignments will be delivered at Moscow station (Nicolaiev Railway) and aleo at the station of the Moscow-Kursk Railway) the central customs warehouse at the former station being the point from which silk shipments may be forwarded to other destinations in Europe,

The rates of freight on the different sections of the route will be as follows.

Yokohama to Tsuruga Yen 0.25 per 10 kilogs or partia ten

Tsuruga to Vladivostock Yen 0.1052 per 10 kiloga, ur part.

Vladivostock to Manchuria Rbis 0.8040 per 1 pood.

Manchuria to Moscow Rbls. 0.2545 per 1 pood.

The rate of freight for shipments by passenger train and freight express will be the same, but it is thought that the passenger train service will not be capable of dealing with very large quantities

The importance of this new arrangement is very great, because, if it works satisfac torily, it may introduce a revolution in the present methode of the silk trado, It should be remembered that raw silk forms by a long way the most valuable of Japan's exports, the amount for 19 being no less than £19,284,000 out of total export for all goods of £81,581,000 Of this sum, ilk to the value of about £18,000,000 was shipped to America, ver £8,000,000 worth to be sent leaving overs to Europe. It is not certain how much of this goes to Moscow. According to the Japanese export statistics, only some £150,000 worth is declared as being sent to Russia, but it is known that the amount finding its way ultimately, - to Moscow vid Lyons must be very much larger than this.

A FAMOUS COOK:

DEATH OF THOMAS, DAVEY OF SIMPSON 8, The death in mail week at home of Thomas Davey, the leader of a small band of English cooks, recalls the old days of Simpson's. For 47 years since Easter Eve, 1867 Davey has been associated with the kitchens of the famous restaurant in the Strand, and it was always his proud boast that he was English born and English trained, and had never received a complaint of his joints from a single customer

Years ago he served in the Rainbow Tavern in Fleet-streat, where he rose to the dignity of soup and entree cook thence he migrated to Simpson's where, in spite of tempting offers from Paris and America, he remained, upholding the traditions of old English cookery and maintaining a scornful attitude to what he described as kickshaws.

Raw materials have, however, cost more, and in view of this the economy which it is expected to effect by closing down the Greenwich factory and transferring the plent to Harefield is a question of some import ance The company is in a strong position, in that it has its own asbestos mines and supplies its product to Govern ment and many large engineering firms. Tor the past nino years the dividend bas averaged 13 1-3 per cent, so that the com Pany may almost be regarded as gilt edged of the commercial kind. A com pany with an issued share capital of close on £200,000 ought, however, not to rest satisfed with a general reserve of £30,000, even though it be supplemented by a reserve of £48,635 for the equalization of dividends and invested in securities of the highest character.

INDIGESTION

Any man or woman who is a victim of indigestion can't possibly enjoy anything e good health. neglect to take proper steps to avoid The worst of it is that people will indigestion Unfortunately, they have a dangerous habit of thinking that the stomach, liver or the bowels will of them selves recover the delicate balance and poise as seen in good health. But this rarely happens, very rarely, and so the most common-sense way to avoid the miseries of indigestion is either to prevent it, or banish it from your system. And prevention is always easier and better than cure

Probably few of the many hundreds of casual visitors to the restaurant were Ju any case, either to prevent or to aware of the existence of the stout, genial banish indigestion, you can't do better man who, dressed in white cap and apron, than take an occasional dose of Mother acted as censor of every joint that found Seigel's Syrup, the world-famous herbal its way upstairs, and who prided himself remedy for stomach and liver troubles.
