DESTRUCTION OF QUERENOY, NOTES,
As the methods adopted by the Hunan Government for the destruction of cur renoy notes have proved affective, and as the Kwangtung Government intends to shortly carry ont a similar project, Civil. Administrator Li has deputed a Mr. Hung to Hunan to study the plans adopted and also to make enquiries as to the co-operation of the merchants and the public in the matter, and the way in which the Hunan Government has succeeded in recalling such 矗 Large quantity of notes with a comparatively small amount of ready cash. Civil Administrator Li bus wired the Tatob and the Commissioner of Finance for Hunan, requesting them to give Mr. Hung every assistance.
DECREASE IN CUSTOMS REVENUE.
Some triangular correspondence has passed between the Comptrollers of Customs at Canton, Chao-chow and King- chow on the subject of the decrease in the Customs revenue. They maintain that the total quantity of goods examined (and consequently taxed) by the Customs at these ports this year does not show any decrease as compared with the corres ponding period last year, and that the decrease in revenue is accounted for by the abnormally heavy discount on the currency notes and the fact of their hay- ing to convert their takings in notes into
