REGATTA AT CANTON,

CANTON SUCCESSES.

The Regatta of the Canton Rowing Club was held on Saturday on the river a little above the Foreign Concessions, where most of the European population was gathered. The reach of the river looked exceedingly pretty, wooded as it is right down to the W | water's edge, and if the weather had only been more kind everything would have been ideal. The course was kept beauti- fully clear for the events and no sampans or junka were allowed to go up by this route during the afternoon, though during the big race a aamupan did come out from the side of the river and crossed the course right in front of the Hongkong boat. Special launches were running to convey people to the scene of the rowing and everything was done by the Canton Rowing Club to make the day's outing a

This was looked forward to as a good raco, and it provided as much excitement as the big race Hongkong got a fine start and gained half a longth. At the half distance, however, Canton were about a length ahead and slowly gaining. The Hongkong pair made the big effort at the three-quarter mile mark, but the gruelling race in the Fours told ite tale, and

although they reduced the lead to half a length they could do no more. Canton won by half a length, thus exactly reversing last year's verdict,

The wind was dead against the course and the tide was just on the turn when this, the race of the day, was started. The water was a bit choppy, but nevertheless there was a good start. Canton pulled 42 and Hongkong 32 in the first minute Cantor, going steadily ahead, got a lead of about one length at the half mile, a sumpan getting in the way making Hong kong lose another half length, Hongkong, however, now put thor backs into it and at the three-quartat mark they were. onwards it was a repetition of the race at Hongkong. The long driving stroke of Hongkong gave them a lead of a canvas and their victory soomed certain, but in the last three strokes Imhoof, by a desperate effort, gained the verdict by one foot, and so Canton get back the Challenge Cup that they had lost last year by about half a length.
