It would be absurd to regard Mr. MASTERSIAN'S defest in these circumstances as showing that the constitu- ency is opposed to the grant of Home Rule to Ireland, That election was fought mainly on the Insurance Question, and so far as the increase in the poll of the Socialists was concerned nobody is likely to imagine that it was due to any antipathy to the views held by Mr. MASTERMAN on the subject of Home Ruls for Ireland. Labour has nothing whatever to gain by supporting Mr. LARKIN's candidature at East Fife, for this would inevitably result in the return of the Unionist, and we doubt whether Mr. LARKIN is the man to command enough support to accomplish this result without the active aid of the local labour unions. For a Labour candidats to poll two thousand votes in East Fife is by no means impossibility, but this is not the occasion, we imagine, when the Labour Unions will lend their ail in bringing about Mr ASQUITH's defeat. It will be a great pity this contest cannot be fought entirely on the question of the bour, for it should be the one which, above all others, should afford an indication of the feeling of the electorate on a subject which has monopolised public attention during the past few weeks to the exclusion of practically every other political question.

It is hard to believe that a thickly. populated country like China should have any room for tigers, but it is well-known that Mesra Bruce and Leyburn, of Amoy, who employed a gang of men skilled in tager tracking, accounted for over 40. It is doubtful if tigers are quite so numerous in the neighbourhood of Amoy now, but one can hardly realise the splendid cover they have in that rocky, hilly country. There are great caves with boulders as large as houses lying in the old water court, and one can go hundreds of feet into these dark, damp caverns, which have been caused by orosion.

I explored many of them, and saw plentiful signs of occupation-tracks on the damp, sandy floor, and bones, hair, and hoofs lying about. It was a weird experience, but I was told that the
