FOOTBALL NOTES.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS MONDAY MARCH 16TH, 1911

A large number of people journeyed to the Happy Valley on Saturday in the hope of seeing the D.C.L.L. and B.E. in opposition for Hongkong League points, It was to have been the fourth meeting of the season, and the three earlier ones had been so close (2-1, 2-1, and 2-0 for the infantrymen) that a fine sporting struggle was anticipated; especially remembering that the Dukes are having a lean time just now and that Corporal Coxon would be again available for the Engineers' defence. But disappointment was visible everywhere when it was found that there would be no play. I undor stand that the regatta was the cause of the postponement, but surely this could have been foreseen and earlier arrange ments made.

Notable developments have taken place recently in the affairs of the Hukwang railways, to be built with the four Powers' loan. The most important is a proposal to change the route of the German section, which was to have been built from Hankow to Ichnng. It is suggested that the line should not, for FOOKEANO, Bitish str., 1,987, T. A. Mit the present at least, bo built to Ichang but rather along the Han valky to Siang-

Many are anxiously looking forward to Wednesday's replay. The fact of the Club taking part is a big factor in their enthusiasm and should the citizens beat the Naval representatives they will most certainly not lack support for the final tie on the 18th. There is no gainsaying that the Club men have come along wonder fully in the last few weeks, and they are a different team entirely to the lot that started the season so wretchedly.

88,

rande that this line would cost some $81,000,000, or say £8,000,000 As the whole of the four Powers loan is only 2600,000 with a provision for a further £4,000,000, if needed, there might pos. sibly be difficulties in the providing of funds for the Ichang Chengtu line 4 any rate, it seems likely that the com pletion of that line will be delayed for some years, and, without it, the line from chang to Hankow would be of little use

KRA or profit.

Mainly for theso reasons it has been proposed to change the route of the Ger The Royal Artillery Cup Competition line. Presumably the change would has finished for, the season, and the not be made without the consent of all

THE AMERICAN LINE BE BUILT ? In some quarters it is doubted whether the American line from Ichang into Szechuan province will ever be built. It is pointed out that the French lines from Chengtu to Haiphong and to Yanchow, for both of which concessions have been granted, would afford a cheaper outlet to the seaan than railway to Hay

and by river to Shanghai This co-

sideration, added to the difficulties and costliness of the Tenang Chengtu line, lead to the abandonment of the latter project.
