SUCCESSFUL FORMATION MEET-

ING AT SHANGHAI.

A meeting of cotton willowners was hold In the offices of Mours, Jardine. Matheson &Co, Ltd. Shanghai. on Monday the 2nd inst., for the purpose of considering the formation of a Cotton Millowners Association of Chim. There was a good attendance, among those present being: Messrs. E. C. Pearce, CE, Antou, C. Robertson, A. Waillenmier, Horatio Brooke-Smith, J. Kerfoot, A. R. Mur phine, A. Hampe, Y. O, Baba, K. Kawa mura, and Chinese representing the Heng Foong, Anglo Chinese and Chung Woh Bills, Shanghai; Soolong Mill, Soochow; Woh Foong Mill. Ningpo; and Dah Sung Mill. Tangchow.

pon the motion of Mr. C. E. Anton, Mr. E. G. Peare was elected to the chair,

Mr. Kerfoot neted, as axretary to the imoeting.

The notice convering the meeting hay ing been read, the Chairman spole as follows:-

BOON

Gentlemen,We are met bere this after

to discuss the advisability of forming a "Cotton Millowners Associa tion of Ching for the protection of matas interests. It is hardly necessary for me to state how important it is to the cotton industry of China generally that Botne sort of millowners' union should be formed.

In all largo centres where the otton industry is carried on, millowners! associations thrive and in & very great measure function for the welfare of all

concerned:

A millowners' association was formed in Shanghai as far back as June, 1898, hab for some reason or another it was allowed to dia, probably on account of insufficient support. To-day, however, the position is greatly changed. We can name in the neighbourhood of Shanghai, Soochow. Wusich, Tungchow and Ningpo no less than thirty mills representing some thing like 850,000 spindles and 3,200 looms with probability of a considerable The huur increase in the near future," surely has arrived when millowners and individuals engaged in cotton spinning, weaving or dyeing, in protection of their own interests which I need hardly say involve á vast amount of capital should stand together, There are privileges which we already enjoy to be safeguarded, and at the same time there are several ritters which should engage the earnest attention of a body such as suggested.

An association representing, as I hope it will, all the cotton mills in and around Shanghai would be in a far stronger position to tackle problems which must from time to time arise than individual millowners.

The industry in China is as yet in its infancy, and in my humble opinion a mill- owners Association. if formed, would go.
