PASSED THE CANAL
Another striking figure of the present table in the renewed eclips of the White Star Line Twelve nonths ago we had to chronicle the fact that the great Liverpool Company had been ousted from third place by the P. & O, Line, and now we find it shouldered out of the fourth position by Mesra. Alfred Holt & Co. The Union-Castle Line has also fared, badly in the struggle. Last year it was seventh on the list, when it is now eleventh, having her bea by Mesars. Elder Dempster & Co, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, the Leyland It Lue, and Messr.. T. &). Harrison. has, however, the consolation of knowing that the rise of its allied undertaking. the R.M.S. P. Company, has been almost phenomenal.
Twrlw months nga that company occupied the 14th place, with a total of £46,350 tons; today it is eighth on the list, with a total of 128,412 tons. The Cunard Line retains its position, being still No. 12, but the Clan Line has gone down two pleces, ned now follows the Cunerd Line, instead of preceding it. The Canadian Pacific Company has made a decided move upwards. cutstripping hoth the Pacife Steam Navigation Con- pany and Messrs. Lamport & Holt, while the City Lite and Meyers. Thomas Wilson, Sons. & Co. has changed places the latter now taking the lood, with a lutal tonnage of 14,000 fors. Ailar result is to be noted with regard to the Allan Line and Messrs. R. Ropner & Co., but this presumably, is due to the trans. Ferenc of certain Allan steamers to the Donaldson Line.

FAILURE OF THE DICENTUDE ISSUE. The Singapore Municipality, about as much any private individual, is feeling the pinch of poverty at the moment, says the Straits Timed Its advertised issue of D: $2,000,000 loan-part of the 4 millions sanctioned by the Government under the Municipal Ordinance in the fall of last year was to some extent a forlorn hope from the moment of launching. Even when the Ordin ance did eventually come into force on Con July 1st there was further delay while the Legislative Council and the Executive Council discussed the uses to which the money was to be devoted.
