official appointments, numbers 2,113 men; the number of persons on board ship in the harbour is. estimated at 9,380 realez aad 1,170 females. Like in other large commercial cities, the business quarters are slowly but steadily losing their resident population, who prefer the really beautiful suburbs, to which necess is made easy by a well-organized electrical tram service, suburban railway lines and numerous steamers on the Elle and the

Alster to the clos atmosphero and the noise and bustle of the town. Besides. the. wealth of all classes of the population is growing year by year, and it will be interesting tri note, the amount of the assessment to the voluntary armament levy to be made, next raonth.

FINANCIAL,

At the monthly meeting of the governors of the Reichsbank last Thursday it was stated that the position of the establish ment was highly satisfactory as compared with that at the same date in 1911 and 1910. A comparison with 1912 would be misleading and could not be looked upon as a criterion, as the directors had thou in the face of the Balkan troubles deemed it advisable to provide unusually large reserves. The reduction of the bank rate at the end of October had acted beneficially on trade and had not been attended by any of the unfavourable results appre hended by some'; there had been no efflux. of gold nor a sudden outburst of apcoula- tion, but in spite of the increasing case no further reduction must ho expected owing to the heavy prospective demands. on the money markets, chiefly on those in London and New York, in the New Year.

COMMERCE.

A promising feature in the economic situation generally is the prolific yield of the cereal crops, with the exception of that of Indian corn, in the whole of the northern hemisphere; the latest statistical- returns give the totals as follows in tons of 1,000 kilos:

Per cent. Whoat 0.352.123 or 0.2 more than in 1912, Rve 40.550.310 ;2 Barley 20.075,071 7.5 Oats 00,389,261 .5 Indian
