HONGKONG, JANUARY 16T, 1914.

THE outstanding features of the history of Hongkong during the past year are more

venienco will be caused, except perhaps in the outlying districts of the Colony- particularly in the New Territory-where it seems likely that there may be greater di culty in enforcing the provision of the new Ordinance than should be the case in the city,

where Chinese subsidiary coin has practically reased to circulate, bis must be accounted A notable achievement, because the evil is one which had been lamented for many years, but it had become an article of faith with most people that, for currency purposes, Hongkong must be considered a part of China and that it would be futils to attempt the exclusion of Chinese coin from circula- tion in a Colony where something like 95 per cent of the population are Chinese. We are almost encouragod by the success of these measures to hope that Hongkong may yet have a gold standard of currency.

Apart from the occurrences alluded to in the foregoing paragraphs, there is not much else to make the year 1913 memorable in the history of the Colony. We have suffered no disastrous typhoons or other calamities-and-public order has been well preserved, notwithstanding the political excitement which prevailed during the period of the second revolution. It goes with out saying that these political disturbances hampered trade considerably, and having regard to the close business relations of the Colony with Canton, the disquieting factor in the outlook at the moment is the widespread disaster which is threatening the Cantonese merchants owing to the

However, as time went on, I. found out the reason for this, and know- ing porfectly well the manner in which some of the sporting bodies in the Colony had encouraged various individual cor petitors, who in turn show nothing else but ingratitude.
