RARE CHINESE BOOKS..
GEFT TO THE BODLEIAN.
A munificent donation has been made to Oxford by Mr. Edmund Backhouse, formerly of Merton College, who has resided for about 15 years in Poking. where an intimate knowledge of the language and of the people has enabled him to turn unrivalled opportunities for book-collecting to good account.
The Chinese library which he has presented to the Bodleian, and which is now safely homed within its walls, com- prises, at a rough estimate, about 17,000 printo volumes, or pfa, as they are ented, and sons 150 manuscript scrolls! and paintings. Of such an enormeus mass of literature it is obviously impos- sible to give any adequate sleseription in these columns. We must content "our- selves with picking out a few of the finer works, more especially those that are at the present moment 4/12 view, in ther Bodleian Picture Gallery.
HING BOOKS.
Are there any Sung editions?" is the first question that will rush to the lips of the Chinese bibliophile It must be explained that, although printing was invented before the Sung dynasty (A.D. 960-1280), no specimens before that period. (except a few recently discovered by Dr. Stein in Central Asia) are known to survive, and even Song Imoky are very much rarer than our own fagurabula. Hence, it is beyond measure interesting to find three works in Mr. Backhouse's collretion which claim that distinction, The oldest and most important is entitled "Chun Ch'iu Ching Chuan Chi Chich," that is, The Spring and Autumn Aonals. of Confucius, with Tso's commentary, accompanied by explanatory notes
is a most voluminous work, filling four boxes each about a foot long; and if one further takes into account its beautiful typography
excellent mate of preservation, the sum of £6-10, at which it has been valued, cannot be regarded ag- excessivo, The work bears no date, but is assigned by Mr. Backhouse to the Year 1130 or thereabouts. Claser examination will be necessary before this conjectural date can be safely accepted There are two indoubted examples of Sung printing in this country with which to compare it. One is a single volume, containing part of a Buddhist satra, and dated 1099, to be seen in a show-case at the British Musim. The other is the "Tu Kung. It Shib Shih Chia Chi
Works of Tu
Fr." in volumes, at Cambridge, which cannot be carter than 1201.. ·Both

of these books are printed on dark yellowish brown paper, whereas the paper of the volumes under consideration is of a much lighter shade, alanost white, in fact. On the other hand, secing that the work was, porchased from the Palace collections after the revolution of 1911, and contains marginal notes by Wu Hai, Ure well-known historiographer opponent of Buddhism who lived frore. 1340 to 1410, there can be but little doubt ns to its high antiquity.
'and'
That cannot be il with equal confidence of the Bext item, “The Family Sayings of Confucius," which, in the absence of any conclusive evidence either way, is on typographical grounds to be attributed rather to the Ming period. The last of the three is the Ku Chin Chi Yao," a very rare and interest- ing set of biographical records by Huang Chên, with marginal notes from the hand of the Manchu neble Jung Lu, who will be remembered as the favourite Minister of the Empress Dowager at the time of the Roxer rising Mr. Backhouso is mistaken in referring this work to somo date before 1085. If he had looked in the last, volume he would have found a men- tion of the death of the poet Su Ch'è in 1117. Moreover, the biography of the anthur, Huang Chên, in the Sung dynastie history, informs us that he took his doctor's degree in 1256, so that the [“Ko Chin Chi Yoo "
can only have been LAPTIAN CORP 175 published towards the very end of the dynasty, or more probably after the Mongol conquest. And that is precisely the conclusion to which one would in any cash drawn by the evidence of the printing which is in the cramped style so characteristic of the Yuan period.""
