I

The Landon Daily Express published exclusively the first description to reach England of the light between the Somali- lood Camel Corps and the Mullah'a. dervishes on August ab.

This is contained in a graphic letter kent to a friend by Lieutenant C. do 8. Duna, who commanded the corpy, after Commandant Corfeld had been killed ut the beginning of the battle, I

sayed from annihilation by a combina tion of good fortune and bravery,

The dervishes approached to within 200 yards of the corps before they started fring, and some of them pewtrated the ranks before they were killed. The Masin did not "jam,* as was stated in the official despatch, but was kept in use until it was disabled by shots,

Had the dervishes followed up their halvaulage, and charged with spears in their usual fashion, they must have "rushed" the enfps. *

The story of the engagement is one of great heroism in the face of over. whelming odds. Although Captain G. H. Sunners was badly wounded in three places. He continued fighting to the end.

Lieutent Dunn states in his letter:---

The Camel Corps went out on August 81 to reconnoitre, All told, we were 112 strong, with Curfield and myself and a man who is here--Sumers. The der- vishes had lanter a large tract of country.

Corfeld on the morning of August 9 drew his men up. We now knew the dor- vishes numbered about 1,000. We began fighting at 6.45, and stopped at about noor.. I frankly say it was a perfect heli

My Somalis themselves, some of whom have been in all the big fights in this country, said they had never seen one to equal it. The Maxim gun kept going for half an hour, and then was disabled by shots,

The dervishes usually began firing about 200 yards off, and came right up to us, two being killed in the middle of us. Twice I thought they were bound to get us, and then at the critical moment hey fled away.

Their head fighting man was found dend close to us. Their losses a.re estimated officially at 200 killed, and probably the same wounded, but I think these are both under the mark, aɛ on one side of our position there were nearly 100 dead. We couldn't count them, as I was afraid they might return, and then they must have finished us.

Summers was very plucky, and didn't give way till just the end, even though wounded three times in left arm and in both legs and no bones broken! At one time during a lull in the proveedings Summers said, "Well, this'll go down to history as Duno's last stand," but be proved to be a bad prophet.

Corfield was killed outright, and I buried him there, as it wasn't safe to risk bringing the body along.
