Wu learn from a littlo notice of the latest issue of the Journal of Tropical Medicine that it contains an article on children in China by a writer who refutes the accusa- tion that the Chinese are prone to destroy female children. We bare not seen the full text of the article, but the short notice of it in a review states that the writer's observations on this matter go far towards
infantile mortality in Chise, but there is also overwhelming testimony that in many parts of China infanticide is common onough. Dr. Duoczos, in a pamphlet on. "The Diseases of China." described infanti- cide as quite a common pret e in Shansi, *The teachers," he wrote, deny that female in nts are thus killed, but the common people readily admit that they destroy many of their girl babies. Thiore are comparatively few old women of the poorer classes who have not teen guilty of the crime. This writer says it has been cal- culated that of every thousand girls born in China sixteen are smothered at birth, to avoid the "calamity and disgrace" of having another girl in the house; while Mr. DYER BALL declares that from enquiries made in some villages in the Province of Fokion "it was ascertained that an average of 41 per cent. of the girls were thus murdered, as we call it, but aeither Chinese law nor opinion seem to consider it as sach" "J. C." is not such an authority upon life in China that his ipse dixit on such a subject will be accepted as the last word.
