TELEPHONING TO TILE ABSENT.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JULY 2xD, 1913,

Receiving telephone messages for a sub- soriber during his absence and reporting them to him on his return has been found practicable on a trial scale by French Government engineers.. A special magneto was fitted to a number of telephones of a Paris change, and on turning the handle of one of these a signal lamp is lighted on the desk of a special operator, who then disconnects the subscriber's number and is randy himself to receive calls for that number. Such communica- tions as arrive are written down. On the subscriber's return the subscriber gives | the handle of the magneto ariother tura, when the special operator restores connec-

Specimens of the spider - known as Thalassius spenceri are in the museum at Durban. Natal, and the curator, E. C. Chubb, has just made scientific announce ment of the discovery of a member of this species in the act of catching fish for food. One of the spiders was captured several years ago by Rev. N. Abraham at Grey- town, when it was placed in an aquarium A servant boy soon noticed the creature eating a pet fish, and the startled ølorgy- man left his study to watch. The spider, three inches across with legs extended, stationed itself at the water's edge, with two legs on a stone and the eight others Lopread out on the wafer.
