THE "SHELL" REPORT.
LAROS INCHRASE OF CAPITAL."
THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, JUNE 28co, 1918.
The Shell dividend of 30 per cent. was known in the market late yesterday afternoon, and was received with some disappointment, 95 per cent, having been anticipated. We doubt if the feeling will leak after the contents of the report havre been carefully digested. This cogerly- awaited document was sent out last night. and if one had to epitomize its contents in a single rd it would hardly be extra vagant to use the exclamatory_ "Pro- digious!" made famous by Dominie Sampson. It is well known that the com- pany's principal revenue is derived from dividends on its investments in the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum and the Bataafs- cho Petroleum Maatschappij, which for tthe
year 1911 amounted to £591,213. — For... - 1912 these dividends, together with those of the Société Bnito and the Société Mazout, reached the extraordinary total of £1,638,216, and when the amounts brought forward and the interest on in- vestments and leans are included the income for 1912 is found to exceed that for 1911 by no less than £124,682. Management, depreciation of investments, tc., being subtracted from the totals, we arrive at a profit of £1.435,818. for last year, against one of £913,735 for the year bofore. It is important to note that this is arrived at after the intermediate.com-. panies have written off the huge sum of 21,100,000 for depreciation; since their inception in 1007 £4,290,000 has been so written off. The Preferenco dividend absorba £75,000, £46,025 is put to reserve (in connection with other additions to be presently referred to), and, as stated above, a dividend of 30 per cent. (includ- ing the interim) is declared on the Ordinary capital (£3,500,000; these allo- catione leaving a sum of £285, 191 to be carried forward. For the preceding year the Ordinary dividend was 20 per cent. an £2,710,000, taking £550,000 only, and the amount carried forward was £204,985.
