Mr. Hodgson informed the jury that the four prisoners were charged with receiving stolen property which consisted of a quantity of jewellery, including silver earrings with pearls and one hair pin. The jury would observe that some articles were specifically mentioned, the explanation of that being that these article would be identified by the owner. The second charge against the prisoners was having in their possession certain stolen property, a large quantity of jewel. lary. The offence was really J very aorious one. The prisoners could not be charged with stealing the jewellery, as it was stolen outside the Colony, and so they wore charged with receiving the pro- porty knowing it to have been stolen, The robbery occurred at Yan Wa market town near Bheklung in March last, when a large gang of robbers attacked a pawn- shop and carried away a large quantity of articles. These included the articles which had been specifically mentioned in the indictment and also a large quantity which the pawnbrokers were unable to identify because the pearls had been stripped from their settings. The four men were found a few days after the robbery at a brothel in Queen's Rond They were all engaged with a Weat basin in front stripping the pearls from their settings and stringing them on to pieces of thin wire.
Evidence was then called.
:
The jury found the four men guilty on both counts, and they were each sentenced to five years' hard labour on each count, the sentences to run concurrently.

THE GERMAN FAR EASTERN SQUADRON.
Rumours are again current, says the Berlin correspondent of the Naval and Military Record, concerning the German cruiser squadron in the Far East, which at present comprises the Scharnhorst, Gavisen, and three small cruisers, with Last year the Bitcher was expected to seven gunbonts and two torpedo vessels,
join this squadron, in place of the Scharnhart, but the change has not been made. It is now reported that a battleship of the Wittelsbach or Kaiser Friedrich class is to be sent to Teigtau, but whe ther in the capacity of flagship or merely as a depôt-ship is uncertain. If she goes in the former capacity she will probably replace the Scharnhorst, which may then relieve the Blücker as gunnery school-ship at Sonderburg. In any case, the strength of the squadron would be raised, though ita average speed would be reduced.
