FASHIONS AND FANCIES.

SPRING COSTUMES,

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, JUNE 14TH, 1918.

Now the bright spring weather has come at last the light costumes suitable for wear are appearing in their thousands. The form is not radically altered from that of the last few months among the generality of wearers, but it is noticeable that in the highest class extravagance and eccentricity have been partially chimi nated so far as form is concernoil. Colour is a different matter," and the most outragems combutions are to be seen. A pariularly ripant tone of blue is combined with an equally crude red, and, what makes it worse, the skirt of a gown is made up in one of these ferocious tints, the bodice in another. But these are few and far between as compared with costumes in tones of beige, grey, store The colour, and other neutral lints. jacket is shorter than that of last year, and when the costume is in silk or satin is often tritmed with rich embroidery, The sabor collar is in favour, but should never be adapted when there is a graceful line of shoulder, for this is completely obscured by it.

Another of these hats is in pale blue tulle with crown embroidered in pale gold.

ESTORS OF LACE FOR TRIMMINGS. Coffee-coloured lace had a long innings a few seasons, since, and is now about to ve another. It will be used by the mila in draping gowns of almost any colour, but chiefly sulphur, yellow, stone, and I the imitations of the antique- cream. the designd are copied from good old patterns, with the result of a very artistic and pleasing effcet.

For girls who play tennis or golf the west idea for everyday outdoor suits in to lay coal and cap of knitted silk, with a short tweed skirt exactly matching these. Indeterminate skades are umally chosen, but there is a great fancy for mauve and certain tones of blue. Among the latter is the well-known Eton blue, now recognised as one of the colours most in demand in frize, homespun, and It whipeord. The smartest of the kitted! coats of this season are in stripes. may be mentioned that these are not among the cheapest-X AND Z. in the Globe.

DRESS AT THE OPERA. Strong colour is especially noticeable at the Oporn. On one evening a lady in the stails wore torra-cotta brocade with a tulle sodier in the brightest and harshest shade of blue, rather lighter than that of the hideous paper in which florists elect to wrap their flowers, The sleeves of this dress were' novel. They were in similar blue tulle to that of the bodice, but vere fluted on the top of the arm, the fates standing out and making a radical contrast to the ordinary fashion. On the same evening a yellow chiffon gown had the bodies made of painted yellow muslin, with long cul in front With this a yellow falling to the bem. talle cap was worn, entirely covering the hair. The effect of this toilette, less starting than the other, was conspicuous, but not unpleasing. An entire dress in bright coral pink was word with a bodice 11 Mack and lo gold, the wahtline partially defined by a girdle in black jet.

Binek alcoves were worn, and in the hair! whigh bow of black tulle, fastened with a wagnificent diamond ornament. Let the reader now add to this curious-com- bination a coral pink crêpe da Chipie cont falling to the heels, lined with black and embroidered all round the outlines in pol gold relieved with dianaante. The cost of this get-up must have been excessive.
