There is not a nerve which has not been exerted by the leaders of Young Chine,|| MATERIALS by the Chinese newspapers, and by certain foreign religious bodies and individuals to force the immediate abolition of the opium trade, and every advantage that con possibly be taken of, any loophole' in the Opium Treaty is availed of by China, notwithstanding that opium merchants and others interested in the upium trade go to the dogs, that opium smokers aro put to the rack or to death, and that Divinity, the guardian of citizens' rights and liberties, is ignored. The so-called anti-opium crusaders are all agog to have the immediate abolition carried into effect. The excitement against opium assumes proportions of an extensively magnified aspect, as if a large Russian Army is on China's threshold; as if the whole Chinese Republican State is in adive conflagra. tion, being on the point of being completely gutted; or, as if a pestilex of the most virulent nature is infecting China. The indisputable fact is, after all, that opium is neither Russian Army nor conflagra. tion nor pestilence, but is mly a luxury, being far loss harmful than intoxicating liquors; and, therefore, the immediate abolition of the opium trade unnecessary as it is mischiorous. CHINA BOUND BY GRATITUDE AND MORALITY. It seems that the foreign-educated leaders of Young China, headed by a celebrity of the present day, Dr. Sun Yat-sen-whose ideas have been greatly they have seen improved by what

in Europe, America and Japan, and by what they experienced there, and whose notion appears to be that they are ideal rulers of China because of such improve- ment and experience-have made up their minds that what does not exist or is noi done in Europe. America and Japan shall not exist or be done in China. But they seem to liave lost sight of the fact tha: China is analogous to a marving being; to overfeed her jeopardises her life Supposing it is granted that under the Opium Treaty of 1913 China has the right of excluding Indian opium from Chin either wholly or partially before it expiration, still, in view of such exclusion
