The tendency distinetly good.

Not only have buying orders, for cover- ing and otherwise, been sent from China, bat the Indian bazaars also have been purchasing moderate amounts in thin market. This has not been a feature for Home weeks, for the Indian "bull syndicate was feeding locally the demand from the bazaars, as well as a good drai of that from China,

Probably, therefore, though the London market has recently been rather restricted, it has not been because demand was small, but rather because the stock of speculators is being somewhat reduced by sales in the East, and orders have been diverted from London.

The stock in Bombay has risen in valac from £900,000 to £1,000,000. The offtake has fallen from 190 to 130 bars a day.

Shanghai reports a stock of £1,850,000, compared with £4,700,000 last week,

part of the customer to examine his pass- book, but the point was not very im portant, for even if there was a duty the particular loss by honouring the first cheque was not caused by the non-per- formance of the duty, As regards the second and third cheques, it was true that if Mr. Walker had found out about the first cheque be would have got rid of the fraudulent clerk, and the second and third forgeries would not have been committed. But the fact that Mr. Walker did not do so was not in law the cause of the second and third choques being forged. At the most it was the causa sine que non, but that would not do. It was therefore unnecessary in this case to con- sider whether in no caso was there a duty on the part of the customer to examine oven assuming his pass-book, because, there was such a duty, the breach of it could not be said to be the effective cause of the loss.

MONTH TO FIND TWO HUSBANDS.

CHEERFUL GIRL VICTIMS OF A WILL.

Much amusement was caused at the im migration station at Ellis Island, New York, last month by the urgent petition of two pretty blue-eyed Danish girla, Alfid Anderson and Ingeborg Jansen, of Copenhagen, for permission to depart immediately for Winona (Minnesota). They are the cheerful victims of an eccentric will made by their grandfather, who bequeathed them each a half-share cf 800 acres of fine farm lands on the con- dition that they marry within thirty days of their arrival in New York.

By the tornis of the will, which the two fair cousins explained to an interpreter. title to the lands will not be finally vested with either of them until they become

others. If at the end of five years one of the cousins has a child and the other has not, the motherless one will lose half her land to the other. If neither has children at the end of five years the entire property is to revert to a male cousin in Denmark.

Both girls departed this afternoon for Minnesota, confidently declaring broken English that they would find good husbands within the stipulated term
