PLANTS MADE POISON BY DROUTH. An investigation of the Bouth African disease known as lamziekte, or lame-sick- nces, suggests that it is due to a special plant poison that is generated under ebnormal conditions in grasses or other plants that are normally harmless. Its development seems to be associated with unusual weather and soil experiences, of which summer drouth is important. Through such conditions wilting would favour the formation of the poison, and this gives explanation for the common belief that the disease results from eating. wilted plants.

or gas-generators, which cannot be removed for changing until the pipe to the gasometer is closed, and which are sent to the supply house for re-charging. With no loose or exposed carbide, there is little danger of escape of gas into the house. Avoiding waste is said to make it practicable to run six 25-candle-power lamps ten hours on pound of carbide, at a cut of three or four cents,

UNBALANCED DEVELOPMENT.

Man's downfall at the end of this geological age is likely to result from excessive brain development. At the London Royal Institution the other day. Dr. S. A. Woodward drew attention to what is called momentum in evolution. and gave illustrations of parts that have grown to unwieldy and uselesa size at the expense of other parts, By the end of the Pleistocene or Glacial period the formidable tusk of the sabre-toothed tirer had grown quite beyond any usefulness to the animal. At the end of the same period, deor, which had begun with smooth heads, had developed antlers of unwieldy size, and in a German species these had even reached a span of twelve fect. Until the end of the Cretacous period all animals were cold-blooded, with no great brain-power. Then warm- blooded animals appeared all over the world, the enormous development of body was checked, and the brain began to grow Besides at the expense of all the rest, increasing in size. the central brain grew at the expense of the kind or automatic brain. Man weems to have descended from an Old World monkey, not found in America, and his skeleton has altered less than that of any other mammal. superiority bas depended solely on development of the brain. The skull of the fossil of La Chapelleaux-Saints shows a brain larger than that of the average European of to-day, but it was of low quality, and in any respects the skull was intermediate between man and ape.

WETTEST TEMPERATE-ZONE STATION. Rather unexpectedly, the slopes of Snowdon, a Welsh mountain only 3,500 fest high, have proven one of the wettest regions of the world. The average annual rainfall of the globe is about 36 inches; that of tropical Cherranongee, Assam is 010 inches, with an extreme of 905 inches in 1881; and that of Maranham, Brazil, 277 inches. Seathwaite, a little village of the English valley of Borrow- dale, has claimed the third highest record. The Meteorological Office, however, has recently received reports from thirteen Welsh stations, of which Lluchfa, at an altitude of 2,500 feet, showed the greatest European rainfall-247 iuches and eleven exceeded the 143 inches of Seath- waite,
